Roger Federer to be inducted into Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. What to know.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame is welcoming a heavyweight to its prestigious group next year.

Roger Federer, a 20-time major champion, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next summer in Newport, Rhode Island, the hall announced on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Federer will be joined by broadcast journalist Mary Carillo, who earned her induction via the Contributor Category. The celebration at Newport Casino is set for Aug. 27-29.

Federer, who was inducted on his first year on the ballot, is one of only eight men in tennis history to achieve a career Grand Slam in singles and was the first male player in tennis history to win 20 major singles titles, according to the Hall’s press release. He held the world’s No. 1 ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks and 310 total weeks over his career. And Federer won an Olympic Gold Medal in doubles in 2008.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and to stand alongside so many of the game’s great champions,” Federer said in the release. “Throughout my career, I’ve always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me. It was very special to receive the news at Swiss Tennis, surrounded by the next generation of players — the place where my own journey first began. To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling. I look forward to visiting Newport next August to celebrate this special moment with the tennis community.”

Carillo has covered 16 Olympic Games and became the first woman to regularly commentate in tennis broadcasts, according to the release.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized in the company of so many other legends and colleagues of the tennis world,” Carillo said. “I’ve been privileged to spend my career sharing the stories of this magnificent game, and if I’ve opened any doors along the way, it will make this day in August even more meaningful.”

Tickets for the event go on sale on Feb. 11. The Hall of Fame altered its format in 2025 and separated the tournament from the induction ceremony for a better fan experience. They will keep that same format, which includes a Hall of Fame Celebrity Pro Classic. Hall of Famers, celebrities and creators will play together in mixed doubles matches.

Might we see Federer take the court in Newport? Tennis fans can only hope.
