Rosenblit sisters of Horace Greeley capture the state girls tennis doubles championship
There are plenty of minor disputes, the kind that are common for teenage sisters who are close in age. But for Michelle and Daniella Rosenblit, there is almost perfect harmony on the court.
“We definitely argue at home,” Michelle said with a grin. “But out here, we get along well, and we’re committed to doing what’s better for the other person.”
More than that, the siblings did on Oct. 29 what was best for their family and the Horace Greeley girls tennis program, winning the state doubles championship at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens.
They're also helping Greeley in its push to repeat as the state team champion, competing on Tuesday in a regional final.
“It was tremendous, especially for Michelle,” Quakers coach John Alkaly said of the senior, who captured a second consecutive state title in doubles. “She felt a great deal of pride in winning it with two different partners, and this one being with her sister, which is special.”
The Rosenblits star as singles players but agreed in September that it would be more fulfilling to compete in the postseason as a tandem, with it being their last chance as high school teammates.
Despite having only teamed up a few times before, their rapport on the court was excellent and the skillsets melded well, allowing them to win the Section 1 title two weeks ago and earn the No. 1 seed entering the state tournament.
“It feels great,” Daniella, a junior, said of their success. “We’ve been training together since we were little but never had the chance to compete as a doubles team. So, this has been a really cool opportunity.”
They rallied from behind in the state final to beat the Saratoga Springs duo of Addison Jones and Claire Dooley, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, shaking off a sluggish start and dominating late.
“Give Saratoga credit because they’re talented and came out on fire while we started slow,” Alkalay said. “We talked after the first set and there wasn’t much of a strategic change to make. It was just, "play better," and they did. They knew the stakes were high and there was a different level of energy in the second set.”
Michelle, in offering advice for the state tournament, told Daniella to “be present in every moment and enjoy each step.”
They certainly did, although their celebration afterward wasn’t exuberant, just warm hugs and wide smiles.
How the other locals fared
Sadie and Scarlett McFadzen, another pairing of Horace Greeley sisters, placed sixth in doubles. Their runner-up finish in the section championships earned them a state tournament berth. Edgemont’s Olivia Jee and Brinda Roy lost to the McFadzens, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 16.
The Section 1 singles champion, Sakura Hino of Keio Academy, placed fourth at states. The senior lost to Great Neck South standout Gabrielle Villegas, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), in a marathon semifinals match. Scarsdale’s Isabel Lin lost in the second round and Ursuline’s Savannah Minter fell in the round of 32. Shenendehowa freshman Jolie Chichak won the state title.
They're not done yet
Edgemont won its first Section 1 team championship and went on to beat Spackenkill in a Division II subregional last week. They’ll face Section 3’s Oneida in a regional final on Tuesday, 12:30 p.m. at Drumlins County Club in Syracuse.
Greeley defeated Warwick in its Division I subregional and will have a quasi-rematch with Saratoga Springs on Tuesday, visiting the Section 2 opponent at Sportime Schenectady, an Albany-area tennis club.
The winners advance to the state semifinals on Nov. 7 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
“Saratoga Springs will be tough and the girls we competed against in doubles will be playing singles; the same for us,” Alkalay said. “They’re strong at the top of their roster, but we’ve got great depth, and hopefully that’ll be our advantage.”
