Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz showed his caring side on Monday when he rushed to help a fan who fell ill during his match on Centre Court, earning cheers and respect from the Wimbledon crowd.

The dramatic moment happened during Alcaraz’s intense five-set battle against Italy’s Fabio Fognini. As temperatures soared over 32 degrees Celsius, a woman in the stands suddenly fainted. The incident occurred just after Alcaraz took a 3-0 lead in the fifth set.

Seeing the commotion, the 22-year-old Spaniard quickly grabbed a bottle of water and carried it over to the fan, who appeared to be an elderly woman. Spectators applauded Alcaraz’s swift and thoughtful response.

The moment was shared by Sportscenter on Instagram.

After the medical team took the woman away on a stretcher, Alcaraz returned to the match with focus. He won the fifth set, closing out the match 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

Wimbledon officials confirmed that Monday was the hottest opening day in the tournament’s history, surpassing a record set back in 2001. Players and fans alike struggled with the extreme heat.

On court, players were given ice packs and cold towels to stay cool. Meanwhile, ball boys and girls wore cooling scarves to help them manage the soaring temperatures.

Tournament organizers did not activate Wimbledon’s official extreme heat rule, which allows a 10-minute break, because they measure more than just temperature when deciding if conditions are unsafe.

For Alcaraz, the incident was just part of an already grueling day on Centre Court. Even though he hit 62 unforced errors, he battled through to stay in the competition.

With his victory, Alcaraz advanced to the second round where he will face British qualifier Oliver Tarvet.

As Wimbledon continues amid the London heatwave, fans will be keeping an eye on both the matches and the well-being of those in the stands. But thanks to players like Alcaraz, they can be sure that someone is ready to help if needed.
