Walsh out of the World Championship in Liverpool
Michaela Walsh is out of the World Boxing Championship in Liverpool as the Belfast featherweight lost to Shih-Yin Wu of Chinese Taipei in their last 16 bout.
Double Olympian Walsh had opened her campaign in impressive style with a stoppage of Saudi Arabia's Hadeel Ashbour on Friday. However, she was unable to replicate as she was edged out on four of the five cards with just one of the judges awarding all three rounds to the victor.
Earlier on Sunday, Patsy Joyce has won his opening 55kg bout with a unanimous decision verdict over Korea's Jaeyong Shin of Korea and will now face Bulgaria's Javier Diaz Ibanez in the last 16.
Paris Olympian Dean Clancy won his opening bout in the 65kg division, impressing against Turkmenistan's Ihlasbek Kochkarov to win by unanimous decision.
Lisa O'Rourke – who won the 2022 World Championships under the IBA banner – made a flying began her light-middleweight challenge in perfect style, sweeping every round on all five cards against Colombia's Shirleidis Orozco to move into the quarter-final.
The Roscommon woman's older sister Aoife is also one win from the podium, impressing in her middleweight last 16 bout against Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic to win by unanimous decision.
Also on Saturday, Donegal's Matthew McCole was edged out on a 3-2 split decision against Ronald Chavez Jr of the Philippines in their 70kg bout, while Daina Moorehouse and Zara Breslin both lost out.
