Girls tennis roundup: St. Cloud Crush sweep past Willmar Cardinals
Sep. 22—WILLMAR — The St. Cloud Crush earned a 7-0 sweep of the Willmar girls tennis team Monday.
St. Cloud is 6-2 in Central Lakes Conference duals and 13-5 overall. The Cardinals drop to 2-5 in conference matches and 5-12 overall.
Willmar, which saw two of its seven matches reach a three-set tiebreaker, has been swept in eight of its 17 contests this season. It was the Cardinals' senior night.
Aubrey Peterson, a senior at No. 3 singles, settled for a loss in a long, but close, three-set match with the Crush's Olivia Erickson. Erickson was the eventual winner at 6-7, 6-0, 10-5.
The Cardinals' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Bryn Behr and Norah Nesges also faltered in a three-set tiebreaker. St. Cloud's Katie Pfeiffer and June Streit earned a 2-6, 6-3, 10-2 win.
Willmar next plays a CLC dual at Detroit Lakes at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
New London-Spicer's Addi Nelson and Olivia Paffrath won a three-set match at No. 2 doubles to help the Wildcats sweep doubles play in a victory over host Montevideo.
Nelson and Paffrath beat the Thunder Hawks' Becca Golden and Kamryn Bjerkest, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 11-9.
Delaney Barber also had a three-set win for NLS. At No. 4 singles, Barber defeated Nora Mages, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4.
Avery Albrecht and Kylie Johnson each won for Montevideo at Nos. 2 and 3 singles.
The Wildcats host Osakis at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Thunder Hawks head to Clara City to play MACCRAY/Renville County West at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg went 3-0 in doubles play in a victory over Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd at Madison.
At No. 2 doubles, the Braves' Keala Carroll and Anabelle DeToy overcame a first-set loss to beat Brianna Borstad and Aidyn Bonn, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The No. 1 duo of Hazel Habben and Ella Lysen won 6-3, 6-3. Lizzie Jopp and Lyla Oakes won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
LQPV/D-B's lone win came from Reese Koosmann at No. 3 singles.
Benson/KMS plays Montevideo at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30. LQPV/DB heads to Granite Falls to play Yellow Medicine East at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle got three of its wins in singles play in a victory over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Belgrade.
At No. 2 doubles, the Jaguars' Kylie Zins and Kwynn Quade beat Delani Beach and Amy Hernandez, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Abby Coners and Harper Herickhoff won at No. 3 doubles for BBE. Ellan Fischer won a three-set match over the Thunder's Reagan Larsen, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, to take No. 3 singles.
The Jaguars return to action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Parkers Prairie.
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area completed a rain-delayed sweep of MACCRAY/Renville County West at Morris.
The match resumed after initially beginning last Thursday. Play was suspended because of rain. Only three girls traveled to make up the two matches that were not completed, according to MACCRAY's activities calendar.
MACCRAY/RCW hosts Montevideo at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Clara City.
