Fossil Ridge sweeps into Colorado tennis quarterfinals with dominant 5A home playoff win
The SaberCats have their sights set on the semifinals — at least — yet again in Colorado's Class 5A boys team tennis tournament.
No. 5 Fossil Ridge swept away No. 12 Broomfield 7-0 on Oct. 1 in the first-round matchup of the 5A high school team bracket.
Fossil (9-1 in regular season duals) is moving on and will hit the road to face No. 4 seed Grandview in an Oct. 3 quarterfinal.
A win there would make it four-straight team semifinal appearances for the SaberCats since CHSAA first instituted the separate team bracket in fall 2022.
Here's how Fossil Ridge dominated Broomfield in the opening round:
- No. 1 singles: Cadell Webb won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
- No. 2 singles: Ian Miller won 6-3, 6-2
- No. 3 singles: Keaton Thomas won 6-0, 7-5
- No. 1 doubles: Davis Samuelson/Diego Pardina won 6-1, 7-5
- No. 2 doubles: Vedant Manakeshwar/Will Schuster won 6-0, 6-2
- No. 3 doubles: Kasey Nelson/Braxton Phillips won 6-0, 6-3
- No. 4 doubles: Sully Kane/James Lillis won 6-0, 6-1
The 5A individual boys tennis state championships will be held Oct. 16-18 at Denver Tennis Park.
Qualifying for the Colorado individual state tennis championships will be determined during regional play from Oct. 8-11. Fossil Ridge will look to defend its regional team title Oct. 9-10 at Loveland's North Lake Park.
Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain fall on road
Two other Fort Collins-area teams qualified for the team brackets, both in Class 5A.
No. 13 Rocky Mountain bowed out to No. 4 Grandview in a 6-1 first-round road loss on Oct. 1.
No. 15 Fort Collins went up against tennis power and No. 2 seed Cherry Creek, getting swept 7-0 by the Bruins.
