Girls tennis roundup: NLS moves into Section 6A semifinals
Oct. 2—NEW LONDON — The New London-Spicer girls tennis team made quick work of Melrose in the Section 6A quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.
The fourth-seeded Wildcats, who played to a 6-1 victory, advances to play top-seeded Minnewaska in the Section 6A semifinals at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Rogers Tennis Center.
Led by its No. 1 doubles team of Averie Turner and Heidi Taunton, NLS swept the doubles matches. Turner and Taunton defeated Addison Kemper and Ramona Lurken-Tvrdik 6-0, 6-1.
Addi Nelson and Olivia Paffrath won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles against Hailey Hammond and Annabelle Lester. Kelsey Schwitters and Maddie Prentice earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles over Molly Rue and Brinley Ritter.
Brooke Glauvitz, Emma Freidel and Delany Barber won at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles for the Wildcats, who are 9-4 this season. Glauvitz won 6-1, 6-3 over Gretta Hellermann. Freidel beat Rachel Welle 7-5, 6-4. Barber defeated Jada Rausch 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Minnewaska swept Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the Section 6A quarterfinals at Glenwood.
The top-seeded Lakers advance to play fourth-seeded New London-Spicer in the Section 6A semifinals at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Rogers Tennis Center.
Rachel Rankin at No. 2 singles, Izzy Wallin at No. 3 singles and Norah VanZee and Clara Rankin at No. 2 doubles each played to a sweep for Minnewaska.
Isla Dille and Emma Wuotila won singles matches as Brynn Nagel and Elise Carlson and Mya Iverson and Kalie Ball earned doubles wins to lift the Dragons past Staples-Motley at Staples.
Wuotila, a junior at No. 3 singles, won 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 against Kaylee Perius. That was one of two matches to go to a third-set tiebreak. Staples-Motley's Jaida Holst beat Molly Patten 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.
Litchfield begins Section 5A tournament play against Glencoe-Silver Lake in the semifinals round at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The top-seeded Dragons had a first-round bye and the Panthers are the fifth seed.
