Lakota West's Fujiwara leads Cincinnati golfers in Division I with state runner-up finish

The Division I golf season in Ohio came to a close on Oct. 13 with the completion of the Ohio High School Athletic Association's state tournament.

Sycamore senior and last year's Division I state champion Eva Becerril capped her career with a fourth-place finish while Lakota West senior Toku Fujiwara was the Division I runner-up on the boys side of the course.

After the first day at the Firestone North Course, three of the top four golfers on the leaderboard came from Cincinnati. St. Xavier freshman Zac McGrath was tied for the lead with a 69 while Anderson's Marshall Morency and Fujiwara were tied for third with 70s.

On day two, Fujiwara was consistent, securing another round with a 70 to finish with a 140. That was good for a runner-up state finish, three strokes behind champion Brady Barnum of Dublin Jerome. McGrath wrapped up third place with a 143 total and Morency finished with a 145.

St. Xavier’s Zac McGrath tees off from the first hole on day two of the 2025 OHSAA DI State Golf Tournament, Oct. 13, 2025, at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

McGrath's run helped St. Xavier finish with a 599, good for fourth in the state by 21 shots behind champion Dublin Jerome and just one shot off of third-place St. Ignatius. Anderson finished with a 627 over both days.

Eva Becerril caps off career with All-Ohio finish

Sycamore senior Eva Becerril, who claimed the OHSAA Division I title last year, placed highly again at state in her final round. The Boise State commit shot a 73 on day one, tying for second with five others, four shots behind Solon's Serena Wu.

Becerril was a shot better on day two, finishing with a 145 to place fourth overall, six shots off of Olentangy's Meadow Tian, who won the tournament with a four-under-par 139.

Six shots behind Becerril was Elise Dunkel of Springboro, who shot a 151 to place ninth. Dunkel led the Panthers to a score of 656, tying for seventh as a team. Anderson, led by a 155 from senior Ellie Lamkin, was right behind in eighth place with a 680.

Individually, Little Miami's Lauren Perry shot a 154 and was in a tie for 11th overall. Lebanon's Olivia Donovan finished in 29th place with her 164.

Matia Kastner finishes first day of Division III tournament

One more day of golf is still on the schedule for the rest of the year. The OHSAA Division III tournament will wrap up on Oct. 14 at NorthStar Golf Club.

Through the first round, Cincinnati's lone representative, Seven Hills junior Matia Kastner, is tied for 18th place. Kastner, who reached the state tournament after winning the district title at PipeStone on Sept. 29, shot an 80 in his first round. He tees off at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.
