ASU freshman golfer emails professor ahead of tournament, gets epic reply about the course

The Arizona State men’s golf team is one of four squads competing in this week’s East Lake Cup at Atlanta, one of the premier college events on the calendar. The lineup includes No. 2 Virginia, No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 7 ASU and No. 14 Florida, based on the latest Golfweek/Bushnell rankings.

But it was a tournament back in September that led to a hilarious exchange between an ASU freshman and one of his professors. Boston Bracken, from St. George, Utah, was looking forward to competing in the Wohali Classic at Wohali Golf Club in Coalville, Utah, outside of Salt Lake City.

Bracken was doing the right thing, reaching out in advance of missing class time. His professor then offered up an all-time response.

“Is there anything important that you need to beware of?” wrote the professor, whose name was included in the screenshot of the exchange. “Are you kidding dude? I’ll do Coach Thurmond’s job for him,” the professor quipped.

The professor then went on to explain in detail about the golf course and the design and strategy.

It’s difficult to know for sure if the advice paid off, but Bracken shot even par over 54 holes and tied for 14th. He was the Sun Devils’ third-best golfer in the tournament behind medalist Connor Williams and Michael Mjaaseth, who tied for eighth. ASU also tied with New Mexico for the team title.
