Dricus Du Plessis: If Chimaev strikes with me, it's a 'terrible night'
Dricus Du Plessis is eager for his chance to rematch Khamzat Chimaev.
Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) lost his middleweight title to Chimaev at UFC 319 in August, where he was dominated and controlled for five rounds on the ground.
He is yet to be booked since, but has gone back and forth with Brendan Allen on a potential fight.
“I’ll be ready for April,” Du Plessis said on Fight Forecast. “I would love to be on that Miami card. There’s no opponent yet, there’s no contract yet, we don’t have any of that. Whoever, let’s go, I’m ready to go again and get back to my belt as soon as possible. It doesn’t really matter who it is, but of course, I’d love for it to be Khamzat and redeem that loss. For me right now, the next fight is the most important fight of my life, and I will win that fight, and I will get my belt back.”
Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) took Du Plessis down 12 times and had over 21 minutes of control time. While Du Plessis expects him to employ the same strategy in a potential rematch, he vows things would go differently if they stood toe-to-toe.
“Fighting Khamzat again is what I’m after,” Du Plessis said. “Am I expecting any surprises? No. There’s not going to be any surprises. That is the way he’s going to fight, and if he tries anything different, it will be a terrible night, and we all know that. But he did what he had to do to win that belt.
“We can’t hate him for that. It’s the rules of the game and he did. So saying it’s not fair, it is fair. He did what he had to do. Not how I would win my belt or would like to, but that’s what he did. Now it’s my responsibility to go fix that to stop him from doing it again, and get him fight my fight.”
