Terence Crawford could not help but laugh when he first heard about the UFC’s heavyweight limit.

Even though there are a few promising names coming through, it is still hard to ignore how thin the division has become, especially in a weight class that usually draws so much attention.

There has been some progress since Rogan first brought it up, but not enough to say things have truly turned around.

One thing that is unlikely to change is the confusing weight restriction for heavyweight athletes, something Crawford found immediately amusing upon first hearing it.

Dana White has changed his mind about Alex Pereira moving up to heavyweight, now supporting the move after initially having reservations.

Pereira will face challenges in the division, but one thing he will not need to worry about is opponents coming in heavier than 266 pounds, or 265 for title fights.

Unlike boxing, where heavyweights can come in at any size, MMA caps its biggest fighters at just over 265 pounds. ‘Bud’ Crawford found this restriction amusing when Rogan brought it up on air.

“The UFC has a heavyweight limit,” Rogan said during an episode of his JRE MMA Show, which drew immediate laughter from Crawford. “Do you know how crazy that is? Isn’t that stupid? That’s stupid, right?”

“It definitely is. I’m just now learning about that,” the 38-year-old replied.

The long-time UFC commentator pointed to Tyson Fury’s fights against Deontay Wilder as an example. If those took place under MMA rules, Fury would have had to cut weight.

Crawford suggested that Rogan should bring it up with White or start a push for change, but the commentator did not seem too hopeful it would go anywhere.

“Nobody listens to me, bro. They don’t, they don’t listen to me. They think I’m crazy… Oh, I have a bunch of wacky rules that I want to institute so I understand why they don’t want to listen to me. I would throw the whole sport up in the air,” he said.

UFC 28 held the only super heavyweight bout in promotion history

Back in November 2000, UFC 28: High Stakes was held at the Mark G. Etess Arena in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Unified Rules of MMA, which established the current heavyweight limit of 265 pounds, had not been introduced yet. This allowed for what remains the only super heavyweight fight in UFC history.

Josh Barnett made his debut that night, stopping Gan McGee in the second round – a win that set him on course to become the youngest UFC heavyweight champion ever.

On the night, Barnett weighed in at 257 pounds, while McGee came in significantly heavier at 296 pounds.
