Australian recalls electric clash with Joao Fonseca ahead of Miami Open return

Alex de Minaur is aiming to improve his record at the Miami Open this week, despite consistently falling short of the latter stages in previous appearances.

Now ranked world No.6 and seeded fifth for the 2026 edition, the Australian enters the tournament with renewed ambition — and vivid memories of one of the most intense atmospheres he has ever experienced on court.

Reflecting on last year’s tournament, De Minaur highlighted his match against Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca as a standout moment.

The Australian came through a tough three-set battle, winning 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 after dropping the opening set.

Speaking to Tennis TV, De Minaur described the occasion as unmatched in his career.

“It was by far the most insane atmosphere I’ve ever played in,” he said. “It was a lot of fun to be part of and to share the court with Joao.”

He also pointed to the overwhelming support for Fonseca inside the stadium. “That match really showed me how many Brazilians there are in Miami,” he added.

Miami challenge continues despite strong ranking

Despite that memorable win, De Minaur’s run ended in the next round, where he was beaten by Matteo Berrettini in straight sets.

Historically, Miami has not been his strongest event, with the fourth round representing his best result across six appearances.

This year, he begins his campaign in the second round against either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Arthur Fery.

A potential rematch with Fonseca appears unlikely due to the draw dynamics, with the Brazilian needing to progress through a section that includes world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz.

Still, De Minaur will be hoping to create new memories in Miami — ideally this time combining a deep run with the kind of atmosphere that made his 2025 clash so unforgettable.
