UFC legend Diego Sanchez sentenced to five years probation
UFC legend Diego Sanchez was sentenced Thursday after eight months of legal proceedings stemming from a July arrest.
Sanchez was in Albuquerque (N.M.) district court and escaped prosecutors' request for two years in prison. Instead, the judge sentenced him to five years supervised probation. Local news outlet KRQE was first to report the news.
Sanchez, 44, had already pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree felony charge of shooting at or from a motor vehicle, after he allegedly fired a gun out of his window when passing a crash on the highway. The guilty plea came as part of an agreement with prosecutors to dismiss a second charge: negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Sanchez said he accepted responsibility for the incident and pointed to substance abuse issues and mental health problems, both of which he was seeking help for at the time of the incident, as contributing factors.
One of the iconic stars to come out of "The Ultimate Fighter, Season 1", Sanchez competed 22 times in the UFC from 2005 to 2022. His only competition since his departure from the promotion was a one-off for BKFC in February 2023.
It's unclear if Sanchez will return to combat sports competition now that this legal proceeding has reached its verdict.
