Ben Shelton reunites with former UF teammate for doubles championship
Ben Shelton paired up with former Florida Gators teammate Andres Andrade for doubles action in Houston last week, and the duo ended up winning a championship together.
The Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship is a 250-level event and the only clay court competition played in the United States on the ATP Tour. Shelton and Andrade defeated the top-seeded pairing of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. It's both Shelton's and Andrade's first doubles championship on the ATP tour. Shelton and Andrade last played together in 2021 at Florida.
"I want to thank my partner Andy for putting up with me and playing," Shelton said. "I'd say we're a lot better at doubles together now than we were when we got kicked off the lineup while playing together at the University of Florida."
Andrade and Shelton reached five break points in the first set but couldn't convert any of them. The second set went their way, forcing a match tie-break. The former Gators took five of the first seven points in the final set and cruised to the win.
They celebrated with a traditional leap into the River Oaks Country Club pool. Check out photos from the match and celebration with the gallery below.
