Tomas Machac responds after breaking Jannik Sinner’s Masters set streak
Jannik Sinner’s remarkable run of straight sets at ATP Masters 1000 events came to an end on Thursday in Monte Carlo, a streak that stretched back to October last year.
Sinner had gone through the entire Paris, Indian Wells, and Miami tournaments without dropping a set and opened his Monte Carlo campaign with another straight-sets win over Ugo Humbert.
But in the third round, Tomas Machac pushed him hard. After Sinner took the first set with little trouble, Machac responded by edging the second in a tiebreak.
Tomas Machac says he’s ‘frustrated with the result’
Machac edged the second-set shootout 7-3 but couldn’t carry that momentum into the third, eventually losing 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.
Speaking on Instagram after the match, Machac said: “If I understand it well, winning one set against Jannik counts as a good performance… Small detail, and that’s what I was fighting for; you still need two to win.
“Frustrated with the result but happy with my level. Fueled for the clay season. On court and every day, movement is key.”
Sinner’s streak of consecutive sets won at ATP Masters 1000 events ended at 37, smashing the record previously held by Novak Djokovic at 24.
Tomas Machac’s 2026 season so far
Machac opened his 2026 season with a strong showing in Australia, claiming his second ATP title along the way.
He picked up the Adelaide International title, defeating players like Tommy Paul and Ugo Humbert on his way to the ATP 250 crown.
After exiting in the third round of the Australian Open, Machac found it hard to find consistency again, exiting early in Montpellier, Doha, Miami and Marrakech.
In Monte-Carlo, he recorded victories over Daniel Altmaier and 16th seed Francisco Cerundolo before falling to Sinner in the third round.
