Ball from final point of Carlos Alcaraz's U.S. Open win sells for record $88,900
Game. Set. Match.
The ball from the championship point of the 2025 U.S. Open men's final sold for a whopping $ 88,900 at Sotheby's on Tuesday, shattering the record for a tennis ball at public auction.
Carlos Alcaraz won his sixth grand slam and second U.S. Open title with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over rival Jannik Sinner, whom he faced in the finals of both the French Open and Wimbledon this season.
Alcaraz delivered the final blow with a booming serve, that Sinner nicked with his racket, before the ball went flying into the stands.
According to the lot description, Sotheby's secured the ball onsite and authenticated it immediately following the match.
Bidding for the ball exploded in the final hour of the auction as the winning quickly climbed from below $ 10,000 to nearly $ 90,000.
In the same auction, a ball from the championship point of Alcaraz's U.S. Open semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic sold for an impressive $ 31,750.
Both auctions indicate what could be a rising trend in tennis memorabilia.
Last year, Sotheby's sold a ball used in the men's singles final from Alcaraz's first U.S. Open title, a four-set victory over Casper Ruud. That ball sold for $ 1,524.
In June, Sothebys estimated the final point from Serena Williams’ 2013 U.S. Open victory would go for $ 30,000 to $ 50,000. It sold for $ 9,525.
