Prior to the start of this year's National Bank Open, former Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard announced that she'd retire once her run in Montreal comes to an end.

Bouchard sent the home crowd into a frenzy on Monday, defeating Emiliana Arango 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the first round. That victory set up a showdown with No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic, who is coming off a semifinal run at Wimbledon.

The former world No. 5 played some of her best tennis on Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough to defeat Bencic. Following her career-ending loss, Bouchard delivered a heartfelt message to the Montreal crowd.

"I think it’s so special to play my last match here in Montreal on this court in front of you guys," Bouchard said. "I remember being a little kid sitting in these stands, hoping and dreaming that I can play on this court one day. … It feels like such a full circle moment to finish my career here.

"Tennis has given me so much. I'm filled with so much gratitude for this sport and the people along the way."

Immediately after Bouchard lost a three-set thriller to Bencic, tennis fans celebrated the 31-year-old Canadian's career.

"Genie Bouchard was the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam singles final – paving the way for Milos, Bianca, and Leylah," Bastien Fachan wrote on X. "She was huge in popularizing tennis in Canada, and she was a bona fide star of the sport in the 2010s. I'm gonna miss her on tour. Salut."

"Thank you Genie. Loved watching you play," Emma Raducanu said.

"Congrats on a great career and inspiring us all Canadians wishing you all the best for what’s next," former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu added.

"Great career @geniebouchard," Nick Kyrgios wrote on X. "Enjoy whatever is next."

"One of the best Canadian players of all time. The first Canadian player, male or female, to reach a Grand Slam singles final. She left her mark on this sport and paved the way for so many other young Canadians to chase after their dreams. The way she played tonight was incredible & took you right back to when she was at her best. Once just a young girl from Montreal dreaming of becoming a professional tennis player. Today, she ends it where it all began. Congratulations on an incredible career, Genie," a social media user added.

Bouchard finished her career with one singles title and a lifetime of memories.

We wish Bouchard all the best as she enters the next chapter of her life.
