DWCS Season 9, Week 6 Results: Fighter earns UFC contract just days after death of his father
Four more fighters are joining the UFC after the latest episode of Contender Series.
On Tuesday night, Week 6 of Contender Series took place at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, featuring three fantastic finishes, and one fighter earning a UFC contract just days after the passing of his father.
Hecher Sosa def. Mackson Lee
In the main event of the evening, Hecher Sosa took a dominant decision over Mackson Lee in their bantamweight fight.
Sosa entered Contender Series with a heavy heart as his father passed away last weekend following a battle with cancer. But instead of withdrawing from the fight, Sosa chose to compete in honor of him, and did so admirably, dominating Lee with his wrestling, grappling, and aggression. Sosa nearly secured a choke in the third round, but Lee hung tough and ultimately survived to the scorecards, though one judge gave Sosa a 10-8.
After the fight, Sosa broke down in tears. Still, there was a silver lining as UFC CEO Dana White offered him a contract and some words of encouragement, saying he was impressed with Sosa’s ability to overcome the hardship he had to.
Iwo Baraniewski def. Mahamed Aly
In the co-main event of the evening, Iwo Baraniewski scored a sizable upset over Mahamed Aly, and did so in style, finishing the fight in just 20 seconds.
A decorated grappler, Aly came into Contender Series with some hype, but Baraniewski paid no attention to that, and countered a lazy low kick with a perfect right hook that sent Aly crashing to the canvas. Baraniewski followed up with a few punches, but the fight was already over. It was the fifth-fastest stoppage in Contender Series history and Baraniewski was, of course, awarded a UFC contract.
Tommy Gantt def. Adam Livingston
In the featured bout of the evening, Tommy Gantt made quick work of Adam Livingston in their lightweight contest.
A former NCAA All-American wrestler, Gantt is the protegé of Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier. He certainly looked the part on Tuesday, scoring several takedowns on Livingston despite several blatant fence grabs. Referee Herb Dean was set to take a point from Livingston for his violations, but Gantt rendered it moot, grabbing a power guillotine when Livingston tried to scramble up, securing the submission win and his UFC contract.
Paddy McCorry def. In Su Hwang
In the second bout of the evening, Paddy McCorry took a lackluster decision over In Su Hwang in their middleweight contest.
A contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 32, McCorry promised a big performance but instead played it safe, taking a clear, if uneventful decision. McCorry used his superior movement to stay away from Hwang’s power, out-landing him at range. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to earn a UFC contract, with Dana White telling him to “get back out there” and pick up some more wins.
Cody Chovancek def. Raphael Uchegbu
In the opening bout of the evening, Cody Chovancek maintained his undefeated record with a third-round knockout of Raphael Uchegbu.
After a slow start, Chovancek hurt Uchegbu in the first round with an elbow on a failed takedown attempt. That elbow turned the momentum around, and Chovancek got the better of the rest of the round and the second as well. Ahead two rounds, Chovancek didn’t rest on his laurels and came out to start the third round, flooring Uchegbu with a right hand just a few seconds into the bout, earning the stoppage and a UFC contract.
