EDN BOYS GOLF ROUNDUP: Pennington off to a hot start for T-Town boys; St. Anthony boys finish fifth at Edwardsville
CHAMPAIGN — Getting off to a hot start had to be what Teutopolis senior golfer Coen Pennington envisioned.
And how he's playing currently.
Through four 18-hole rounds this year, Pennington has a scoring average of 71.7. That included a career day at the Champaign (Centennial) John Macek Invitational on Aug. 25, where he fired a 69 at the University of Illinois Blue Course in Savoy. Pennington sank an eagle putt on the 18th hole to put his name in the history books.
That round tied the school record, set by Christian Deters, who graduated in 2017. Deters played at Webster University for four years.
Head coach Mike Wilson noted that Pennington has taken on a leadership role this year.
The Wooden Shoes finished second at the tournament, firing a team score of 297. They were five shots behind St. Anthony for first.
Isaac Weber fired a 73. Kade Pennington shot a 77 and Owen Kremer shot a 78.
The scores that didn't count toward the team total were Matthew Habing's 81 and Landyn Thoele's 85.
Bulldog freshman Logan Gowin shot a final round of 70 and tied for second individually.
"He's definitely got the goods with his whole grasp of the game of golf and what you need to do," St. A head coach Phil Zaccari said. "He's advanced above his age."
Drake Brown shot a 73. Alec Hakman shot a 74 and Maddux Clark shot a 75.
The scores that didn't count were Briggs Whitley's 78 and James Trupiano's 83.
"It was a good win," Zaccari said. "It showed that we are heading in the right direction. We had some better scores and guys were working on things that they wanted to clean up from (Macomb)."
Effingham finished fourth with a 308.
Jack Swingler shot a final round of 75 to tie for 10th individually.
"Jack started with a nine and played the rest at one-under par," head coach Jeff Schafer said. "He did a great job of hanging in there."
Leo Wyckoff also shot a 75 and Jude Traub and Cannon Bockhorn each shot 79.
The scores that didn't count were Brody Boehm's 82 and Allyn Koester's 93.
Altamont was the final area team to participate, finishing 13th with a 366.
Evan Elam was the low individual for the Indians, carding an 86.
"He started off bogey, double-bogey and then had a few pars. He was able to work it out and stay calm," head coach Rob Zumbahlen said. "I know before, he told me his goal was to play 'bogey golf,' which is typical for him, but he went out and shot better.
"He's really come a long way since last year."
Mason Schaub shot a 90 and Harrison Lash and Kamryn Wolfert each shot 95.
The scores that didn't count were Henry Niermann's 102 and Hunter Grobengieser's 106.
