“Durinho” has called it a career.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns suffered a knockout loss to surging Canadian prospect Mike Malott in the main event of UFC Winnipeg last night (Sat., April 18, 2026) inside Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (watch highlights).

Moments after the defeat, Burns made it official.

He removed his gloves and left them in the center of the Octagon — the universal sign of retirement.

“Thank you, Canada. I work so hard. I worked very hard for this fight,” Burns told Paul Felder after the fight. “I know Mike was going to fight at home. He was going to bring everything. I put on a great camp. I sacrificed so much. I left no stone unturned…I couldn’t show it. Shout out to Mike Malott; he did a good job.”

“I work so hard, but I think that’s it,” Burns concluded. “I had a great career. I fought so hard. I wanted to win so bad. I think that’s it. I fought the best guys in the world — No. 1 pound-for-pound fighters, former champions. I never said no to a fight. I think that’s it, but I’m content. I fought everybody.”

Burns (22-10) joined the UFC in 2014 after establishing himself as one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors in the world. He began his Octagon run at Lightweight, going 7-3 before moving up to Welterweight in 2019 — a decision that changed everything.

At 170 pounds, Burns really hit his stride.

He rattled off four straight wins to earn a title shot against former teammate Kamaru Usman, dropping the champion early before ultimately falling via third-round knockout (watch highlights). He rebounded with a win over Stephen Thompson and then went to war with Khamzat Chimaevin an instant classic — still widely considered the toughest test of Chimaev’s UFC career.

Burns would go on to defeat Neil Magny and Jorge Masvidal before running into a brutal stretch to close his career, dropping five straight against elite competition — including Belal Muhammad, Jack Della Maddalena, Michael Morales, Sean Brady, and now Malott.

Even in defeat, Burns never ducked a challenge.

A fan favorite known for his aggression, durability, and willingness to fight anyone, anywhere — Burns is also one of the true good guys in the sport.

Now, after more than a decade in the UFC, he walks away.

Enjoy retirement, Gilbert.

Thanks for the fights.
