Harrison Ott, Cameron Huss look to join Wisconsin golf royalty as co-leaders of State Open

The second round of the 105th Wisconsin State Open featured a two-time champion making a charge up the leaderboard, a recent past champion holding serve and a pair of strong players looking for their first home state Open championship.

Harrison Ott, who won the 2020 and 2021 Opens as an amateur, carded a 5-under par 67 on Aug. 19 on the River Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler to jump into a four-way tie for first place with first-round leader Sam Weatherford, 2023 champion Cameron Huss and Tyler Leach. Now a professional, Ott played in the 2025 U.S. Open and has made four starts on the Korn Ferry Tour this summer. He also won the Tennessee State Open in early July.

Leach, a Marquette University alumnus, shot a 4-under 68 to make a move to the top of the leaderboard. The 24-year-old knocked on the door of the Minnesota and Wisconsin State Opens last year with top-10 finishes in each, and he walked through it in Minnesota in July in claiming that state title. He has not won a Wisconsin State Open.

Weatherford is also looking for his first State Open championship, and he backed up a strong first round with a 1-under 71 to remain atop the leaderboard. In 2024 he was one of several co-leaders heading into the final rounds but ultimately finishing 10th.

Huss won the event as an amateur in 2023 and he, like Ott, is looking vying to become the first player to win the title as an amateur and then a professional since Dan Woltman (2007 as an amateur, 2018 as a pro). Huss shot a 2-under 70 to keep pace with the leaders.

Cameron Huss is one of the second round leaders at the 2025 Wisconsin State Open. He won the 2023 event as an amateur.

Others who have won the tournament as an amateur and professional include:

  • Jim Milward (1937 as an amateur, 1938 and 1946 as a pro)
  • Tom Veech (1948 as an amateur, 1956, 1957, 1962 as a pro)
  • Bob Brue (1958 and 1959 as an amateur, 1963 and 1970 as a pro)
  • Steve Stricker (1987 as an amateur, 1990, 1991, 1998 and 2000 as a pro)
  • Dan Woltman (2007 and 2009 as an amateur, 2018 and 2019 as a pro)

Just one shot behind the quartet of leaders is Charlie Delsman, who fired a 5-under as well to get to 6-under for the tournament.

Also within striking distance heading into the final 36 holes of play on Aug. 20 on the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run are amateur Mason Schmidtke (3-under), Mike Van Sickle (2-under) and Jacob Beckman (1-under).

The top 10 is rounded out by five players tied for ninth at even par, including past champions Jordan Elsen and Daniel Mazziotta. Jeffrey Perry matched Ott and Delsman for the best round of the day by shooting 5-under to shoot up the leaderboard. Bennett Swavely and Russell Dettmering are also even par for the tournament.
