🏑FIELD HOCKEY — Division II quarterfinals

Kendall Champagne, South Kingstown field hockey

No. 5 South Kingstown 2, No. 4 Chariho 0

Based off their two previous matchups, the Rebels and Chargers knew one goal might be enough to earn a win. It just took longer than expected.

With the teams locking heads defensively and scoreless through three quarters, South Kingstown finally broke through in the fourth thanks to Marah Nelson and added some insurance before the quarter was over to secure the 2-0 win over Chariho and earn a spot in the semifinals.

The Rebels beat the Chargers 1-0 back on September 16 and the rematch on October 20 ended in a scoreless tie. With how both teams played early, it seemed like Thursday was headed in that direction as well.

But South gained some offensive momentum and Elise Champagne was able to slide a pass to the stick of Nelson, who finished 48 seconds into the fourth quarter for the 1-0 lead.

Chariho – which co-ops with Prout – tried to push back and find a game-tying goal, but the Rebels’ defense was too strong. SK added some insurance late on a goal by Kendall Champagne and when the final buzzer sounded, the team celebrated with goalie Harper Rodman, who had six saves in the win.

It was a tough loss for Chariho, which got a brilliant performance in goal from keeper Nola Bellnier, who had 10 saves in the game.

South Kingstown moves on to the semifinals and will play top-seeded Cumberland on October 27.

🎾Girls Tennis – Division I Quarterfinals

La Salle tennis doubles Sloane Ferrara/ Elizabeth Vitale

No. 1 La Salle 4, No. 8 Cranston West 0

After winning 11 straight state championships, the Rams know how to take care of things in early-round playoff matches.

Up against the Falcons, La Salle was businesslike in its approach and made sure the result was never in doubt. A clean doubles match started the fun and three singles wins were right behind it in a 4-0 win over Cranston West.

Alessandra Roye and Beth Vitale picked up the first point for La Salle with their 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and wins soon followed.

No. 1 Caroline Trask was a 6-0, 6-0 winner and Holly Speranza won by the same score at No. 3, putting the Rams one point from taking the match down.

Sloane Ferrara didn’t waste any time, finishing off her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 to send La Salle to the semifinals where the Rams are set to host No. 5 East Greenwich at a date and time to be determined.

First doubles player Olivia Wehbe runs down a ball for the Moses Brown Quakers.

No. 7 Moses Brown 4, No. 2 North Kingstown 3

While many of the final matches to go on never get to finish, the one that took place in this one did as Caroline O’Neill and Olivia Wehbe pulled out a tough win at No. 2 doubles that gave the Quakers’ a 4-3 upset victory over the Skippers.

Chalk usually rules the Division I tournament, but no one bothered to tell Moses Brown that when it arrived in North Kingstown.

The match was a roller coaster, with the Quakers showing their doubles depth and the Skippers showing why their singles lineup was so feared.

Sofia Mikulasek hits head hi return on court 4 for the Quakers.

Moses Brown’s picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles by Lilly McColough and Sierra Slack and the No. 3 team of Lucy Kinnell and Cady Pham had a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory. The Quakers’ also grabbed a crucial win at singles when No. 2 Sofia Mikulasek came through with her 6-2, 6-4 victory.

North Kingstown had three singles wins. No. 1 Ruby Bigda continued her impressive season with a 6-2, 6-3 win; No. 3 Bramble Ashton won 6-3, 6-4 and No. 4 Haley Votta won 6-1, 6-4.

The last match to take the court was No. 2 doubles but Wehbe and O’Neill were ore than ready. The battle with NK’s Abby Brodin and Mary McPhillips was an epic one, with the Quaker duo scratching out a 7-5 win in the first set, then coming through in the tiebreaker to clinch the match and send MB to the semifinals.

Moses Brown will be on the road for that match, traveling to Barrington at a date and time to be determined.

No. 5 East Greenwich 4, No. 4 South Kingstown 2

The Avengers came up clutch, winning three three-set matches with the No. 1 doubles team of Navya Patel and Miranda Thakuria pulling out a comeback that earned the clinching point in the team’s 4-3 win over the Rebels.

East Greenwich and South Kingstown met twice in the regular season, with both teams earning 5-2 wins on their respective home courts. Playing at Broad Rock Middle School in South Kingstown, things seemed ominous for the Avengers.

South Kingstown took control early, thanks to No. 1 Alexa Clark, who picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win. With three other first-set victories on the court, a Rebels’ victory seemed likely.

But East Greenwich continued to battle. The Avengers earned a crucial 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles from Elle Marcks and Natalie Yang, but the Rebels responded with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 singles from Tess Ruhren.

After dropping the first set, Jennifer Chen fought back to claim the second in a tiebreaker, then earned the point when her opponent was forced to default due to injury.

At No. 3 singles, senior Savannah Hepel used her experience to refocus herself after dropping the second set, then cruising in the third to grab the 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win.

With No. 3 doubles playing, the stage was set for Patel and Thakuria. The duo dropped the first set, but grabbed momentum quickly in the second and never let go. Riding the wave of energy, the two pulled out the 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win that sealed up the victory.

East Greenwich now moves on to the semifinals and will travel to play La Salle at a date and time to be determined.

🎾Girls Tennis – Division I Quarterfinals

No. 1 Prout 4, No. 8 Westerly 0

Revenge wasn’t on the Crusaders’ minds. Taking care of business was – and they did just that.

In a rematch of last year’s Division II championship match, Prout showed up and did what its done all season – win. The Crusaders didn’t let emotions play into the match and played good tennis from start to finish with Cailin O’Hara earning the point at No. 4 singles to earn the 4-0 win over the Bulldogs.

“It honestly feels amazing,” O’Hara said. “Our team has worked so hard to get to this point and we definitely deserved to win.”

“The past is the past. We’re re-writing our story,” Prout No. 1 Olivia Siravo said. “It’s starting fresh, clean slate.”

Prout got its revenge over Westerly in the regular season and showed up Thursday only worried about playing well enough to head to the next round.

It didn’t take long to see the Crusaders do just that. With the Bulldogs’ shorthanded without All-Stater Virginia Royce, Prout took control in the singles matches. Siravowas first off with a 6-0, 6-0 win and the No. 2 doubles team of Harper Redfern and Sierra Redfern soon followed with their 6-0, 6-1 win.

It wasn’t long after that Olivia Lemay finished off her match at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0, and things looked good for the Crusaders with leads in other matches.

O’Hara won a game late in her second set that caused a premature celebration from her teammates and left O’Hara wondering what was going on. She refocused, got down to business and closed out the final game of the 6-1, 6-2 win so an actual celebration could take place.

“I did know the match was still going on,” O’Hara said. “When people were celebrating, I thought it was our No. 2 Reece. When I turned around she was still playing and everyone made a mistake.

“Knowing I had one more to win, I was definitely nervous but I was like ‘I’ve got this, I’ve been preparing for this all year.’ This was my moment.”

Prout, which went undefeated in Division II play this season, is now on to the semifinals and will host No. 4 Lincoln School on Monday.

“Since we started in the summer until now, we’ve definitely been preparing for this point,” O’Hara said. “We’re ready.”

Lincy Chen - Girls tennis. Lincoln School.

No. 5 Lincoln School 4, No. 4 Lincoln 2

The Lynx took to the road for their home playoff match but didn’t let that affect their play, getting clutch performances at doubles and two important wins at singles to come away with the 4-2 win over the Lions.

Lincoln School was the higher seed, but with no lights on their home court, were forced to the road. It made sure it didn’t matter.

The match was tightly contested. Lincoln School’s Lincy Chen picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2, but Lincoln grabbed a pair of victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles from Lorelei Achambault – who won 6-4, 6-3 – and Sia Seth – who won 6-2, 6-1.

Lincoln School leveled the score and took the lead thanks to its doubles. Corinna Flores and Rose Korper pulled out a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and Juniper Truskoski-McKenna and Zoila Wenne had a hard-fought, 6-0, 7-6 (6) win at No. 2 doubles.

The match at No. 3 doubles was a tight one, but Tanvi Bobbili took away the stress from the match for the Lynx, closing out her 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Lincoln School advances to the semifinals and will travel to play Prout on Monday.

🎾Girls Tennis – Division III Quarterfinals

Mays Miller, Providence Country Day girls tennis

No. 3 Providence Country Day 4, No. 6 Central 0

In a battle of the Knights, PCD – which co-ops with St. Raphael – used its doubles depth to take care of business and take down Central, 4-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mays Miller and Ella Taylor set the tone for PCDSRA with a 6-1, 6-0 that gave the team momentum it never let go. Isla Blecker picked up the second point for the Knights with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and the No. 3 doubles duo of Poppy Futtrell and Eliana Perez grabbed the third point with their 6-1, 6-0 win.

Ahead in other matches on the court, the No. 2 doubles team of Megan Bianchi and Julia Pavlovich made sure they didn’t matter as they finished off their 6-4, 6-2 win to clinch the match.

Providence Country Day advances to next week’s semifinals and will travel to take on No. 2 Tiverton on Tuesday, October 28.

⚽GIRLS SOCCER — Division I

North Kingstown 2, Chariho 1

RICHMOND — North Kingstown will carry an extended winning streak into the defense of its Division I girls soccer title.

The Skippers have captured their last 14 matches after a gritty 2-1 win at Chariho, a thriller on a perfect fall Thursday night.

Alexa Barajas scored twice for North Kingstown to erase a one-goal deficit. Her second in the 59th minute was the winner, as the Chargers fell just shy of taking at least a point from this meeting between a pair of teams who reached the 2024 semifinals.

“We never look down on Chariho,” Barajas said. “We know they’re going to give it their all.”

The Skippers were locked in a 1-1 tie when Daniella Sisco drove down the left wing and picked out Barajas with a cross near the top of the penalty area. She cushioned the pass with her chest, let it drop toward the ground and fired a quick left-footed shot toward the far post. The ball kissed the inside of the post and caromed into the open net, giving North Kingstown the lead.

“Before I get the ball I look where I am and I think about what I can do with the space that I have – even if it’s minimal,” Barajas said. “I love hearing that sound.”

Chariho was a whisker away from earning a draw inside the final two minutes. Addyson Denecour made a powerful run down the middle and laid off a pass toward the right wing. Aubrey Currier whistled a shot across the cage that slipped just wide of the left post, allowing the Skippers to escape.

Barajas fired home the equalizer in the 28th minute to help North Kingstown (15-1-0) draw level. June Merchant’s pass off the left wing found Barajas making a diagonal run across the nearest defender. Barajas stormed into the penalty area and converted at the near post, sending the two sides into halftime even.

“Definitely important,” Barajas said. “We had to gain the momentum back. We had to get one on the board before it became more difficult.”

Currier netted an early goal for Chariho (9-6-3), which was looking for a fifth straight win. The Chargers are considerably improved from the side that dropped a 5-1 decision to North Kingstown in the season opener. They’ll be among the teams looking to deny the Skippers a fourth championship in the last five years.

“It’s a whole new season starting with the playoffs,” Barajas said. “Any team could pull up a result that nobody would think about. We’re just going in with our all.”

⚽GIRLS SOCCER — Division III

Captains meet before Exeter-West Greenwich faces Classical in girls soccer on Oct. 23.

Exeter-West Greenwich 4, Classical 0

WEST GREENWICH — It would be difficult to make an argument against Exeter-West Greenwich returning to the Division III girls soccer final.

The Scarlet Knights will enter the playoffs unbeaten against league opponents after another impressive outing Thursday afternoon. Haley Pariseault netted a pair of early goals and her teammates added two more in a 4-0 shutout of Classical on Senior Day.

Only a scoreless draw with Narragansett and a loss against Prout — the defending Division II champion — kept Exeter-West Greenwich from perfection this regular season. They’ll enter the playoffs looking to win one more match than they did in 2024, as the Scarlet Knights suffered a shutout defeat to St. Raphael in the title round.

“It was easy to start where we left off,” Pariseault said. “We all played out of season with each other. We were messing around over the summer.

“It really helped us bond more. We’re very comfortable with each other.”

Pariseault’s opener in the fourth minute came thanks to that chemistry. Nini Olawuyi slipped a pass through the left side and Pariseault swooped in off the wing to find open space. Her shot back across goal hit the far corner and was the lone strike Exeter-West Greenwich wound up needing.

“Practicing on this field has helped us,” Pariseault said of the bumpy grass surface. “It’s harder to play. It makes it seem 10 times easier when we go away and play on turf.”

Ella Moulton, Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer

Pariseault fired just under the crossbar from 25 yards to make it 2-0 and another nice passing combination made it 3-0 before halftime. Hailey Jones curled one down the middle and Ella Moulton hit the top left corner to give the Scarlet Knights (16-1-1) all the momentum.

Cora Cranston made a nice diving save to her left midway through the second half to keep the Purple (9-5-1) off the board and preserve her shutout. Arianna DiBernardo completed the scoring with a long-range strike in the 80th minute, and Exeter-West Greenwich made it five straight victories since a 3-0 defeat at the Crusaders on Oct. 14.

“Of course, it was unfortunate that we did lose,” Pariseault said. “But it definitely helped us learn playing a higher-level team.”
