How did Springfield area girls tennis players fare in the 2025 state finals?

Five players remain.

Chatham Glenwood advanced three players, and Sacred Heart-Griffin has a doubles team left after Day 1 of the Class 1A Girls State Tennis Finals in the Chicago suburbs.

Glenwood starts fast

Glenwood senior Ellie Surges and the freshman doubles team of Olivia Hallberg and Sanvi Modi each won their first two matches in the championship bracket before falling in the third rounds.

Surges, seeded 9-16 in singles, recorded a 6-1, 6-4 first-round win over Metamora’s Lexi Burton before taking out Elle Steffen of Wheaton St. Francis 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the second round. Surges met 3-4 seed Nicola Kupczyk of Chicago Latin and lost 6-0, 6-0 in the third round. Kupczyk did not lose a game in her first three matches to advance to the quarterfinals.

Surges will play Lizzie Scheidt of West Chicago Wheaton Academy in the fourth round of the consolation bracket at Mount Prospect High School on Friday.

The unseeded Hallberg and Modi made an impression in their first match at the state level. The Glenwood duo defeated 9-16 seed Mary Huff and Sahana Aggarwal of Chicago Latin 6-4, 2-6, (10-8) in a third-set tiebreak to open the tournament.

Hallberg and Modi downed Alondra Espino and Megan Ardaugh of Joliet Catholic 6-4, 6-1 in Round 2. Glenwood lost its third-round match to 5-8 seed Kennedi Taylor and Natalie Beck of Glen Carbon Father McGivney 6-1, 6-0.

Hallberg and Modi play Chicago University’s Anika Sadanand and Zahra Ansari in the consolation bracket’s fourth round at Palatine High School.

Glenwood senior Lydia Ryherd failed to advance to Friday’s action. Ryherd, who finished fourth in singles at the Mount Zion Sectional on Oct. 18, lost her first-round match to 3-4 seed Sophia Holt of Chicago University 6-2, 6-0. Ryherd ended the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Maggie Biscan of Lemont in consolation play.

Ryherd placed second behind Surges at the Central State Eight Conference Meet on Oct. 11 and played in the No. 2 singles hole during the season. She finished with a 25-11 record.

Glenwood tallied eight points on Thursday and is tied with three other teams for 11th place in the team standings. Deerfield leads the tournament with 22 points.

SHG toughens up to stay alive

Junior Lucia Hassebrock and sophomore Catalina Mosquera of SHG opened the tournament with a hard-fought loss to unseeded Rachel Lance and Jenna Mustapha of Dixon 6-3, 6-7 (4), (12-10). That did not stop the unseeded Cyclones from rebounding and winning their next three matches.

Hassebrock and Mosquera defeated Metamora’s Tayla Brown and Naomi Roth 7-5, 6-0 in the consolation’s first round. Then SHG beat Salem’s Madison Keserauskis and Ella Robinson 6-0, 6-1. They ended the day with a 5-7, 6-2, (10-5) win over Katalyn Young and Gretta Leedy of Mundelein Carmel to advance to Friday’s matches.

Hassebrock and Mosquera face Alexia Conine and Callie Zhao of Winnetka North Shore Country Day in the consolation bracket’s fourth round at Palatine.

Jacksonville’s return worth the wait

Jacksonville had not sent a player to the state tournament since 2015 until juniors Leah Range and Abby White finished fourth in doubles at the Mount Zion Sectional.

Range and White drew 5-8 seed Hailey Goins and Teodora Savic of Darien Hinsdale South and lost 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Jacksonville bounced back in the consolation bracket to beat Waterloo’s Ella Brown and Lucy Baldwin 6-0, 6-3.

Range and White’s tournament ended by losing to Adi Davidson and Allie Ruholl of Teutopolis 7-5, 6-1 in the consolation’s second round.

Along with their fourth-place sectional showing, the Crimsons duo also placed fourth at the CS8 meet and finished the season with a 19-13 record.
