Josh Thomson 'wouldn't be shocked' if UFC cuts Patchy Mix: 'He is not who we thought'

Josh Thomson is worried about Patchy Mix's future with the UFC.

Mix (20-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) was edged out in a split decision loss to promotional newcomer Jakub Wiklacz (17-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 320 prelim bantamweight bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. After back-to-back decision losses to Mario Bautista and Wiklacz, Thomson said something has to change for Mix or he could find himself on the chopping block.

"Patchy Mix either needs to find a new gym, a new coach, or he needs to figure something out," Thomson said on his "Weighing In" podcast. "Because I don't see him being the same fighter he was in Bellator, which is fine. In the UFC, things are different. The bright lights hit a little bit differently. The energy hits a little bit differently. All of those things are very true. The kid that I saw in the first fight, I was willing to give him a pass against Bautista because he took the fight on short notice. Tonight he had a full camp. He fought a guy who was a decent grappler but was not the level of his grappling, but still did things to him that I have not seen people do to him.

"The buzz around Patchy Mix has always been – whether it came from Merab (Dvalishvili), whether it came from Aljo (Sterling), whether it came from anybody outside of Vegas – Umar Nurmagomedov and I talked about how good he was. Definitely fantastic, definitely good on the ground, definitely hard to deal with. I have not seen that in his two performances in the UFC. I would be surprised if they (UFC) kept him. I hate to say that, because I want him to stay. I want him to be a part of the UFC because I believe he has a bright future. Maybe it's not right now, though. I don't know. Something has happened. It's not the same. Even his grappling tonight, he was having a hard time passing guard. He's putting himself back into the guard."

The former Bellator champion had big aspirations upon signing with the UFC, previously declaring himself as the best bantamweight in MMA. Thomson is disappointed to see Mix fail to live up to his potential.

"Since he's got to the UFC, he is not who we thought he was," Thomson said. "And that sucks because I have called his fight, I've interviewed him several times at the desk at Bellator. … I know so much about this young man that I know how good he could be. I've been spewing about how good he's been in the last four years or so, but I have not seen it, and I have to eat some crow.

"I have not seen it in the UFC. It would upset me if they did cut him, but I wouldn't be shocked if they cut him. When you come over as a multiple-time champion from another organization, the buzz is hot, everybody is talking about you, and you have two performances like that."
