Katie Taylor confirms retirement plans as she eyes ‘iconic’ Croke Park fight
Katie Taylor has revealed her intention to retire from professional boxing after a final bout in Dublin this summer.
The 39-year-old, who successfully defended her undisputed super lightweight world title against Amanda Serrano in a thrilling third encounter in New York last July, is hoping to stage her swansong at the iconic Croke Park.
While the specifics of her final opponent and the exact date remain unconfirmed, Taylor expressed her desire for a grand farewell to a career spanning two decades.
“We are still trying to figure the details out, but I do have one more fight this year,” Taylor told RTE Sport.
“It is kind of like my retirement fight. It has been an amazing journey, the whole lot of it, over these last 20 years. That’s what we’re hoping and preparing for, to have one last fight. It is going to be an amazing celebration.”
Croke Park, which is set to host the All-Ireland Hurling and Football Championships in July, remains Taylor’s preferred venue for this momentous occasion.
“I just want to fight in Dublin to end my career. Obviously we are still hoping for Croke Park, hanging on to a bit of hope that it can happen,” she explained.
Acknowledging potential hurdles, Taylor noted other viable options within the Irish capital.
“If it doesn’t happen, there are plenty of options there. I have obviously fought in the 3Arena a couple of times, the Aviva Stadium is also there. Croke Park would be top of the list.”
She added: “Fighting my last fight in our most iconic arena, how special would that be? I think it would be absolutely remarkable if I was able to do that. I’m not sure if it is going to happen or not.
“Either way, I’ll be ending my career here and I’m very, very excited about that.”
