Knicks re-sign guard Landry Shamet to one-year deal

The Knicks are re-signing veteran guard Landry Shamet to potentially fill their final roster spot.

A source tells SNY that Shamet had other options but prioritized continuity in returning to the Knicks, and wanted to help the Knicks compete for a title.

SNY had previously reported that New York saw Shamet as a possibility and he was open to returning to the team.

Shamet, 28, averaged 5.7 points per game and shot 39.7 percent from three-point range over 50 games with New York last season.

Shamet’s salary will put the Knicks’ team salary right up against the second apron. The Knicks’ team salary cannot exceed that apron. Including Shamet’s deal, the Knicks now have just enough room to add a rookie free agent before they hit the second apron.

But even with Shamet on the roster, the Knicks will still have financial flexibility to sign a different player ahead of the season before reaching the second apron. Shamet’s deal structure gives them the financial flexibility to sign someone else if injury forces them to fill another need or if they choose to go with another veteran out of camp.

What about Malik Beasley? Things are always fluid, but Beasley’s legal situation had made the Knicks hesitant to sign the shooting guard. Beasley is under investigation by the NBA and is part of a federal investigation into gambling.

The Knicks still have two open two-way spots to fill as well. They are considering players outside of the organization to fill those spots. They can carry as many as 20 players in training camp.

Big man Trey Jemison III is among the players on New York’s radar as they plan for camp, per league sources. I would be surprised if the Knicks didn’t bring another ball handler to camp to compete for a spot.

No matter who the Knicks sign for training camp, Shamet should have the inside track on a roster spot. The veteran wing garnered significant respect within the organization for fighting through a shoulder injury early last season and contributing in the postseason.

Shamet played in 11 playoff games last season, providing a couple of sparks off the bench in the Eastern Conference Finals. He scored 12 points in the Knicks' Game 6 loss to the Indiana Pacers. ESPN first reported Shamet’s decision to return to New York.

Mathews signing training camp deal

Additionally, the Knicks are signing shooting guard Garrison Mathews to a training camp deal, league sources confirmed. Mathews will be with the Knicks on an Exhibit-10 deal, according to a source.

The New York Post earlier reported the signing.

The 28-year-old Mathews, a Lipscomb product, has played 314 career games in the NBA, suiting up for the Wizards, Rockets, and Hawks.

In 47 games last season with Atlanta, Mathews averaged 7.5 points while shooting 39.0 percent from three-point range.
