Latest round of UFC roster cuts claims TUF champion, Heavyweight fan favorite
Roster trimming season continues.
Just a three days after a wave of cuts saw three fighters released, three more fighters have been removed from the UFC.com roster. Unemployment heading into the holiday season is always grim news, but how else is the promotion to make room for the latest round of affordable Contender Series standouts? Per a first report from Sherdog’s Tom Feely, the latest fighters released from the UFC are Chris Barnett, Kiefer Crosibe, and Kurt Holobaugh.
How many times has a fight been so bad that fans are tweeting, “Cut them both?” At UFC 321, it actually happened! In the immediate aftermath of Hamdy Abdelwahab vs. Chris Barnett, the victorious Abdelwahab was released. Some pointed out the unfairness of keeping fan favorite “Huggy Bear” around while cutting the victor, but it would seem his release just took a couple weeks longer to process.
Barnett (23-10 overall, 2-4 UFC) will forever have a place in the hearts of hardcore fans for his outrageous spin kick KO of Gian Villante (watch it here).
Technically, this is the second time UFC has cut Kurt Holobaugh (21-10 (1) overall, 2-6 (1) UFC). Holobaugh earned his way back into the UFC by winning The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) with a slick triangle choke submission over Austin Hubbard. Unfortunately, Holobaugh would lose three of his next four bouts. Most recently, Holobaugh was quickly submitted by Jordan Leavitt at UFC Vegas 107.
Finally, Kiefer Crosbie (10-6 overall, 0-3 UFC) received his walking papers as requested. Crosbie was highly upset about his latest loss to Taiyilake Nueraji, which involved a nasty illegal blow and then received questionable medical care. He’s in search of greener pastures, as UFC will not hold him to the final fight of his contract.
