Mayo girls roll in first round of state tennis tournament; Lake City loses in quarterfinals

Oct. 21—MINNEAPOLIS — No. 1 ranked and two-time defending state girls Class 3A tennis champion Mayo made easy work of unseeded Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the state team tournament, winning 7-0.

The tournament is being played at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center. Mayo's win moved it to 23-0 this season and 74-0 over the past three seasons. It next faces No. 4 seed Mounds View at 8 a.m. Wednesday in the state semifinals. The championship match is 4 p.m. Wednesday and third place at 2 p.m.

Mayo is seeded first.

The Spartans, who have three of the top 10-ranked players in the state (Malea Diehn, No. 2; Aoife Loftus, No. 3; Ana Medina, No. 6) as well as another extremely strong singles player in Eliana Elder, swept through the singles competition while losing just four games total between the four spots.

Mayo has beaten No. 6-ranked Mounds View twice this season, 6-1 and 7-0.

Cambridge-Isanti had entered the state tournament 21-2.

MINNEAPOLIS — Lake City, at the state girls tennis tournament for the first time in school history, lost 6-1 to St. James in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 16-2 overall, their only other setback to Cannon Falls early this season.

Lake City will next face the loser between quarterfinal foes No. 3 seed Foley and unseeded Montevideo at 6 p.m. today in the consolation round.

St. James entered as the tournament's No. 2 seed while Lake City was unseeded. St. James dominated the doubles, winning at all three spots in straight sets.

Lake City got its lone win at No. 4 singles where senior Emma Siert beat Claire Carlson 6-2, 6-4.
