Michael Johnson before UFC 324: 'I want to accomplish more'
To say, at this point in his career, that Michael Johnson is a veteran of the fight game would be an understatement, an he embraces that.
"I made a comment in the gym the other day," Johnson told MMA Junkie Radio. "I go, 'I think I might be one of the fighters now that's fought on every new TV deal the UFC's gotten."
Indeed, Johnson's time with the promotion dates back to Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2010 during the Spike era. The longtime UFC stalwart lasted through the FOX and ESPN eras, and now he prepares for his first fight of the Paramount era at UFC 324 where he'll meet Alexander Hernandez on Jan. 24 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For Johnson (24-19 MMA, 16-15 UFC), there hasn't been a special secret to enduring 31 UFC fights over 15 years. But it helps that, at 39, he remains motivated as ever.
"I wish I knew the secret sauce. I contribute mine to just sticking around because I'm not done," Johnson said. "I've been in this sport for 16 years. I'm not satisfied with what I've accomplished yet. I want to accomplish more. I still want to get as close as I can to a world title, if not win it. I need to put some things aside and leave this game, to be able to say I don't want to leave this game and not have anything."
Currently riding a three-fight winning streak that includes one Performance of the Night bonus, Johnson is experiencing a mini revival after losing six of eight. To reach his first four-fight winning streak in 10 years, he'll have to get past Hernandez (18-8 MMA, 10-7 UFC), who's also on a heater after four consecutive wins, including back-to-back TKOs of Chase Hooper and Diego Ferreira.
Johnson knows he has a serious challenge in front of him.
"I definitely think a big thing with him is confidence," Johnson said of Hernandez. "He's got a few knockouts. He's going into these fights, and he's winning. He's pretty athletic. He's really going into these fights confident, and I definitely see that. We've game planned for him pretty well, so we'll be ready. …
"I'm just in there to win. I'm gonna just stick to the process, stick to what I need to do, stick to the game plan, and however the fight ends, that's how it ends."
