Norma Dumont frustrated after Harrison-Nunes fight cancellation
Norma Dumont is frustrated with the current UFC women's bantamweight title situation.
Kayla Harrison was set to fight Amanda Nunes in a massive superfight for the division's title at UFC 324. However, Harrison was forced out due to a neck injury that required surgery. Dumont (13-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) was hoping for the fight to go off without a hitch. Due to the cancellation, she's left without direction, as she was expecting to face the winner.
"The division does seem a little bit stuck," Dumont told MMA Junkie through an interpreter. "Who knows what's gonna happen, and how this division's gonna move forward at this point.
"… It's really frustrating. I thought that once Kayla and Amanda fought, finally, it would make the division move forward. For me, it's a tough situation because Julianna (Peña) is hurt, Raquel (Pennington) is hurt, I have nobody above me to help me move up that staircase, and we're all stuck. The division is not moving."
Dumont currently holds the No. 3 spot in the UFC's official women's bantamweight rankings. Above her are the champion, Harrison, and former champs Peña and Pennington, at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Her last fight was in November, a split decision over No. 4 Ketlen Vieira.
In an ideal world, Dumont would like to fight someone ranked above her, but injuries and the uncertainty of when Harrison vs. Nunes will take place, leaves her without answers about what's next.
"I'm going to keep on doing my work," Dumont said. "I'm willing to accept another fight if the UFC presents it. I can't be stuck just because Kayla and Amanda are in that situation – I had nothing to do with that. So, I'm going to keep on working. First of all, let's see if I get another fight, and let's see what happens in June if they do finally fight.
"… I'd like Julianna – she was the last titleholder before she lost to Kayla, and she beat Raquel. So, I think that's the name that makes the most sense for me."
A fresh name for Dumont could be Ailin Perez, who faces Macy Chiasson at the end of February. Dumont lost a split to Chiasson, but isn't interested in running that fight back due to her inconsistent results. Perez does pique her interest since she has called her out, but apparently, that fight was offered before.
"Yeah, she challenges; when the contract comes, she doesn't accept it," Dumont said. "… My focus is not on her, it's on the title, but I'm sure I'll have the chance to beat her up for 15 minutes and have fun."
For now, Dumont will just keep her head down and control what she can, which means staying ready for whenever the UFC calls with a name. Her ultimate goal is to become the women's bantamweight champion, and she will do what it takes to make that happen.
"I get up every morning, and I work. I go and train, I do what I have to do. It can take time, things can happen, but I guarantee you, I will have my opportunity. I'm going to get my opportunity, and I will become champion."
