Novak Djokovic reveals stunning retirement plans

38-year-old Novak Djokovic, the undisputed greatest men’s singles tennis player of all time, shared his retirement plans.

Djokovic dodged the question in recent years. His physical health and genuine uncertainty could be the reasons why.

However, Djokovic decided when he wants to walk away from the sport, and spoiler alert, it is not in 2026.

What Novak Djokovic said

Djokovic said that he wishes “to retire at the 2028 Olympic games with the Serbian flag in my hands.”

The 2024 Olympic gold medalist admitted that Paris win was one of the most significant in his storied career. He will be 41 years old when the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics get underway on July 14, 2028.

Will he be able to defend his singles title? Could Djokovic play doubles and mixed doubles at his last competitive event? These are questions that only time will answer. The biggest factor will be Djokovic’s physical health.

The Olympic matches are best-of-three sets which is beneficial and less physically demanding than best-of-five set Grand Slam matches.

What Djokovic’s playing schedule looks like between now and then is also a key question. There were concerns about Rafael Nadal’s 2024 Paris Olympic eligibility because he had been out of the sport for an extended period with injuries.

Of course, Spain had a much deeper tennis talent pool in 2024 so perhaps this will not be as significant for Djokovic who is unparalleled in Serbian tennis.

Will Djokovic lead an Olympic year retirement exodus?

Thirty-something players may be eyeing the Olympic year as their retirement timeline also. Jessica Pegula has mentioned it.

Madison Keys could also be operating with a similar thought process.

There is a lot of tennis to be played between now and then, but the Olympics will become a more prominent storyline and talking point in 2027 as players prepare.
