Oleksandr Usyk books WBC title fight at the Egyptian pyramids against kickboxing icon Rico Verhoeven
One of the Seven Wonders of the World will host two legends of combat sports.
Boxing pound-for-pound king Oleksandr Usyk is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt on May 23.
Usyk vs. Verhoeven will stream on DAZN pay-per-view worldwide.
Usyk, 39, is boxing's WBA and IBF heavyweight champion as well, however those titles were not mentioned within Friday's fight announcement.
Usyk, Uncrowned's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer, is a two-division, three-time undisputed world champion. He unified the cruiserweight belts in 2018 with a wide unanimous decision over Murat Gassiev. The Ukrainian then repeated his achievements at heavyweight in 2024 by defeating Tyson Fury and regained the IBF heavyweight title he never lost in the ring with a fifth-round knockout of Daniel Dubois in July.
Verhoeven, a longtime GLORY Kickboxing heavyweight champion, retired from kickboxing this past June after retaining his GLORY heavyweight title by defeating former two-time light heavyweight titleholder Artem Vakhitov by unanimous decision.
Verhoeven holds multiple GLORY Kickboxing records, including his mark of 13 consecutive title defenses. Verhoeven has previously competed in professional boxing in 2014 and MMA in 2015, respectively, winning his only fight in each sport by knockout.
Verhoeven, 36, now returns to boxing for the first time in more than 12 years for the fight with Usyk.
