Scottie Scheffler is a start away from this historic benchmark

Scottie Scheffler will make his 2026 debut at the American Express, with a chance at history.

Scheffler, the four-time PGA Tour Player of the Year, was announced on Wednesday as part of the former Bob Hope Classic field. The World No. 1 has been a frequent competitor at the event, only missing last year after a kitchen accident during Christmas forced him on the sidelines for several months. Scheffler joins Robert MacIntyre, Ben Griffin, Sepp Straka, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Rose, Akshay Bhatia, Adam Scott, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Luke Clanton and Brian Harman as early commits to the tournament. The AmEx begins in two weeks, and will serve as the second tournament of the PGA Tour season following the cancellation of the Sentry.

In five career starts at the AmEx the Texan has posted four top-25 finishes, although he hasn’t come inside the top 10 since 2020. However, a victory could be significant on a few fronts. A win would give him 20 career titles on tour, not that his status is in any jeopardy, but 20 wins grants lifetime tour membership. Moreover, a win would push Scheffler over the $ 100 million career earnings list on the PGA Tour, a feat only achieved by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. (Though Scheffler is noted in several places as having crossed the $ 100 million threshold in some places, that calculation factors in his Korn Ferry Tour earnings.) He has a chance to pass Woods this year as the top earner in PGA Tour history, although McIlroy also has that opportunity.

Additionally, tournament officials for the WM Phoenix Open announced that Scheffler has committed to play. This is not a surprise, as Scheffler is a two-time winner at TPC Scottsdale.

Scheffler is coming off another historic campaign, capturing the PGA Championship and Open Championship as part of a six-win season in 2025. He has finished T-8 or better in his last 17 starts.
