T.J. Dillashaw: Umar Nurmagomedov lacks star power for UFC title shot
T.J. Dillashaw doesn’t see Umar Nurmagomedov getting the next title shot after UFC 324.
Since he was edged out in his bantamweight title fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311, Nurmagomedov (20-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) rebounded with back-to-back wins over Mario Bautista followed by Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 324 this past Saturday.
However, Dillashaw sees Nurmagomedov being leapfrogged by Sean O’Malley (19-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC), who snapped a two-fight losing skid with a close decision win over Song Yadong also at UFC 324. He explains that an O’Malley title shot simply has more appeal.
“He’s got to get some more wins, and he’s got to do it in impressive fashion because we know probably O’Malley is going to get the title shot,” Dillashaw said on the JAXXON Podcast. “I’d imagine Merab is going to take a little bit of time. I bet that’s what’s going to happen. You have got a superstar in O’Malley, and people want to watch him fight. Again, it’s not about what you do in the cage.
“What I’m saying about Umar is, O’Malley’s win wasn’t like super impressive. It was good. He did a great job, and he got the win, but he’s getting the title shot because of his star power. Umar doesn’t have that star power that O’Malley has, so if you don’t have that star power, you better show it in the cage. You better go out there looking to demoralize someone and get the finish and it be like, ‘Oh sh*t, we can’t not give Umar the fight.'”
Newly crowned UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan has options, from a trilogy bout with Dvalishvili, to fresh opponent Nurmagomedov, and former foe O’Malley, who holds a controversial decision win over him at UFC 280.
