Tennis mailbag: Ask your questions on the ATP and WTA season so far and tournaments to come

The tennis season is heading into its closing stages, as the ATP and WTA Tours travel through Japan and China ahead of the season-ending Tour Finals in Turin, Italy and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia respectively. The four Grand Slams are done for the year, with plenty of ranking points still on offer at the 1,000-level events in China, in Beijing and Wuhan (WTA) and Shanghai (ATP).

At the top of the WTA Tour, Iga Świątek can chase down world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with strong performances, after Sabalenka withdrew from the China Open in Beijing with a minor injury. Zheng Qinwen, the Olympic champion and China’s biggest star right now, is expected to return from injury; Coco Gauff is still in the process of changing her serve and U.S. Open finalist Amanda Anisimova will look to boost her career-high ranking of world No. 4. There is a close-run contest for the final spots in Riyadh, while in a year of players rising from the sport’s minor leagues to announce themselves on the main tour, there are many more stories to be written.

On the ATP Tour, Carlos Alcaraz seeks to defend the world No. 1 ranking he snatched back from Jannik Sinner by beating his closest rival in the U.S. Open, while a bevy of contenders just below the top eight try to take advantage of injuries to incumbents Ben Shelton and Jack Draper to punch tickets for Turin. Young talents in the 40s of the rankings will push for the wins that take them into the top 32, increasing the possibility of a seeding at the Australian Open in 2026.
