This season has been a mixed bag for American tennis star Jessica Pegula, but she has a golden opportunity to turn things around on the hard court.
Pegula, the No. 3 ranked player in the world, hasn't played that well in Grand Slam tournaments this year. She was eliminated in the third round of the Australian Open, suffered an upset loss in the fourth round of the French Open, and failed to get out of the first round at Wimbledon.
Unfortunately, Pegula has dealt with death threats and nasty messages online after her losses this season. It's something she brought attention to at the French Open.
""These betters are insane and delusional and I don't allow dms and try to remember when to shut my comments off during tournament weeks but they always find a way to my timeline," Pegula wrote. "This stuff has never really bothered me much but does any other sport deal with this to our level? I'd love to know because it seems to be predominately tennis?? It's so disturbing."
She continued, "Every person on tour deals with it. It's so bad. Those are just really small snippets. I get told my family should get cancer and die from people on here on a regular basis. Absolutely crazy."
Despite all the criticism Pegula has dealt with this year, she refuses to let it bring her down.
Earlier this week, Pegula announced that she's partnering up with gorjana. She showed off some of the company's jewelry in a stunning photoshoot.
"Being the first @gorjana Athlete has been an honor," Pegula wrote on Instagram. "I’m excited to celebrate and support women in sport — and to inspire the next generation of game changers. Welcome to gorjana Sports Club."
Pegula will begin her quest for a Cincinnati Open title this Saturday when she takes on Kimberly Birrell.
During the 2024 Cincinnati Open, Pegula made it all the way to the final. She ultimately fell short to Aryna Sabalenka. They ended up meeting again in the US Open final just two weeks later. Once again, Sabalenka got the best of Pegula.
We'll see if we get a rematch between Pegula and Sabalenka later this month.
