Tom Aspinall: If I don't finish a fight quickly, people say I'm 'sh*t'

Tom Aspinall thinks he receives unfair criticism surrounding his fights.

The UFC heavyweight champion has been getting plenty of flack after his no contest against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 this past October. Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) was poked in both eyes by Gane (13-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Round 1 which rendered him unable to continue.

Up to that point, all but one of Aspinall’s finishes had come in Round 1. So when Gane looked like he was about to stretch Aspinall past the opening five minutes, many accused the Brit of looking for a way out. Aspinall thinks him being heavily chastised is ridiculous.

“I think a lot of the time my success, my record, that record I’ve got, and finishing fights really quick – like if I don’t finish the fight in the first minute, people think I’m looking sh*t,” Aspinall said on Paddy Pimblett‘s YouTube channel. “People are like, ‘He’s sh*t. He’s not looking good today.’ No, we’re just evenly matched and we’re having a fight.

“I’ve not punched him properly yet. It’s been pretty smooth sailing as far as fans with me, but the tide has turned. But I’ve got a lot of good stuff, as well. It’s not all bad. It’s just thickened my skin up a little bit, and you’ve just got to see it for what it is. Dirty b*stard – (Gane) just needs to cut his fingernails. Disgusting.”

Aspinall is set to undergo double eye surgery to repair the damage from the eye poke, which has left him with double vision. The plan is to have his title fight against Gane rebooked as soon as doctors clear him to train.
