Vote: Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for Sept. 14-20
The week of Sept. 14-20 was another exciting week of high school female sports action from the Ames area.
The Ames girls tennis team qualified a doubles team for state, Ballard hosted the 45th annual Mike Car Invitational cross country meet, and Roland-Story ousted Nevada in a pivotal Heart of Iowa Conference volleyball match during the week.
There were several outstanding individual performances from Ames-area female athletes during the week.
Here are the Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of Sept. 14-20. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Avilee Miller, Ballard
Miller placed second overall and first in Class A during the varsity girls race at the Mike Carr Invitational cross country meet on Sept. 15 at the Ballard Golf and Country Club in Huxley.
Miller completed the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 41.2 seconds to win the Class A title by 18 seconds over Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Elliotte Von Roden.
Ellie McCorkle, Ames
McCorkle won the 200-yard freestyle race at the Waukee Invitational on Sept. 20 in Waukee.
McCorkle finished the race in 1:55.03 to defeat Waukee's Tori Kettles by over three seconds for first place.
Adeline Oetker, Ames
Oetker teammed with Laura Chen to qualify for state in 2A girls doubles tennis at the 2A Region 1 singles and doubles tournament in Cedar Falls on Sept. 17.
She also was victorious in singles play during the Little Cyclones' 5-0 2A Region 1 victory over Fort Dodge in Ames on Sept. 20.
Oetker and Chen came in second at the 2A regional doubles tournament in Cedar Falls to punch their tickets to state. Oetker defeated Fort Dodge's Mia Carpenter in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1, during the No. 3 singles match of the Little Cyclones' 5-0 sweep over the Dodgers.
Clara Newton, Gilbert
Newton had a strong night at the net for the Gilbert volleyball team during a 25-17, 29-27, 25-14 sweep over Boone on Sept. 16 at Boone.
Newton finished the match with 13 kills on 21.2% efficiency for the Tigers. She also contributed six digs and two blocks.
Brookelyn Jondle, Roland-Story
Jondle set the tone for the Class 3A No. 15 Roland-Story volleyball team during its 25-14, 25-9, 25-18 sweep of 4A No. 11 Nevada in a Heart of Iowa Conference match with championship implications on Sept. 18 at Story City.
Jondle finished the match with 12 kills on an incredible 57.9% efficiency rate after only committing one attack error all match. She also had seven digs, four assists and one block and ace apiece.
