Wimbledon or the Australian Open: Rybakina reveals which Grand Slam win truly defined her career
Elena Rybakina has secured her second Grand Slam title after coming out on top at the Australian Open.
Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka to win the Australian Open, a little more than three years after her breakthrough win at Wimbledon in 2022.
After dropping the opening set, she found herself down 3-0 in the decider before turning things around to win another major title.
Rybakina has now opened up about where her focus lies for the rest of the season and which of her Grand Slam titles holds more significance for her personally.
Elena Rybakina opens up about which Grand Slam win mattered more
Rybakina’s first major breakthrough came at Wimbledon in 2022, a moment that set high expectations for her future in the sport.
After her win in Melbourne, Rybakina was asked to reflect on both experiences and how they compared.
Speaking after her latest victory, she suggested that Wimbledon held more significance due to the pressure and nerves she felt during that tournament.
“It is different feelings, I will say, because Wimbledon was my first experience getting that far in the tournament, and I won straightaway,” Rybakina said in her post-match press conference.
“I remember I was not sleeping well, semis, even quarters. Final I don’t even talk, like, how many emotions and how many thoughts was going through my head. Yeah, it was really stressful. I will say Wimbledon.”
“I think with the experience, with the years on tour, I learned a lot. Later on of course you have same emotions. You want to win but it’s kind of different. I was managing to sleep well here and that’s a good thing.
“I mean what’s the worst thing can happen which my coach always tells me you lose but then you get another opportunity to play next week.”
Elena Rybakina’s response to whether she now feels unstoppable
Rybakina has now won 20 of her last 21 matches, including titles in Ningbo, the WTA Finals, and most recently the Australian Open.
Following her second Grand Slam title win, Rybakina was asked if she feels unbeatable at the moment.
“Not really,” answered Rybakina. “I mean, I just played in Brisbane. I lost the match there. I feel like throughout couple of weeks I improved, which is really nice.
“Yeah, each match was different, but again, the serve was in the beginning not as good. The movement was not the same as today and semifinal match.
“So I’m just very proud of the work we did with the team and actually that I found my kind of best form here at the Grand Slam.”
Rybakina will now rise to world number three after winning in Melbourne – matching her career-high ranking from February 2023.
The Kazakh player is next scheduled to play back-to-back WTA 1000 tournaments in Doha and Dubai over two weeks this February.
