Olympics Respond to Historic Naomi Osaka News

Naomi Osaka won a WTA title on Sunday, taking down Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 6-1, 7-5 in the final of the L’Open 35 de Saint-Malo.

This win marks Osaka’s first WTA victory since becoming a mother in the summer of 2023. The four-time Grand Slam champion claimed her last win at the 2021 Australian Open.

Sunday’s win was historic for Osaka, who’d previously never won a clay-court event.

The Olympic Games took to social media to react to Osaka’s accomplishment.

“Naomi Osaka is a champion once again! The four-time Grand Slam winner, and Tokyo 2020 final torchbearer, has lifted her first trophy since taking a maternity break. Congrats, Naomi!” the Olympics’ official account wrote on X.

“She gave birth in July 2023 and was out of action from September 2022 to January 2024,” the Olympics added in its post. “Not only is the four-time Grand Slam champion back to winning ways, but she’s even making history. This victory in France was her first ever title on clay!”

Osaka took to social media with a reaction of her own after Sunday’s win.

“Kinda ironic to win my first trophy back on the surface that I thought was my worst. That’s one of my favorite things about life though, there’s always room to grow and evolve. Thanks to everyone accompanying me on this journey, I know it’s turbulent but it’s also really fun and I’m grateful,” the 27-year-old tennis star wrote on X.

With Sunday’s win, Osaka propels herself back into the world’s top 50 for the first time since she became a mother in July 2023. The former World No. 1 moved up into the No. 48 spot on Monday.
