The 2025 Wimbledon Championships will officially begin on Monday. Unfortunately, there are a few notable names missing from the men’s draw.
During the French Open last month, No. 14 seed Arthur Fils was unable to compete in his third-round match against Andrey Rublev due to a stress fracture in his lower back. Fans noticed he was wincing in pain during his five-set victory over Jaume Munar in the previous round.
The hope for Fils and his team was that an early exit at Roland-Garros would put him on track to play at Wimbledon.
“We decided with the team it was better to stop now, because if I’m stopping now, I could stop for only four to six weeks,” Fils said. “If was pushing myself too much, I would probably stop for a couple of months. … Had to make a choice.”
Even though Fils pulled out of the French Open before things got worse, his back hasn’t healed in time for Wimbledon.
Fils, who made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2024, isn’t in the field for this year’s Grand Slam tournament. It’s unclear when we’ll see him back on the court.
That being said, tennis fans around the world are praying for Fils.
“Get healthy Arthur Fils. Young man it’s a marathon not a sprint. Be blessed,” one fan said.
“Hopefully he fully recovers before the hard courts and is ready for the US Open,” a second fan wrote.
“Praying for a speedy recovery,” a third fan commented.
“Unfortunate! A great player to watch, professional and strong,” another fan added.
Fils should, in theory, be cleared in time for the US Open in August. He has never made it past the second round at the iconic tournament in Queens, New York.
