Patrick Morgan's double championship highlights top performances at Mitchell Tennis Classic

Jun. 29—MITCHELL — A strong showing from Mitchell Middle School student Patrick Morgan highlighted top performances from Mitchell athletes on the tennis courts.

Morgan, who will be an eighth-grader in the fall, was the lone athlete to be crowned a double champion at the Mitchell Tennis Classic over the weekend, which was rescheduled from June 21-22 due to extreme heat in the area.

In total, 38 athletes participated in the tournament, including 31 from Mitchell. Champions were crowned in five singles divisions and three doubles divisions, as well as a mixed doubles division.

Morgan's first championship came on Saturday, winning the French Open singles bracket. Opening the tournament with a 10-4 victory over Charlie Patzer, Morgan defeated Baylee Callahan in the semifinals 10-5 before winning in a tiebreak over Jakobi Brink 10-9(8) in the championship match.

On Sunday, Morgan teamed with Stratton Zens to take the Davis Cup doubles title with a 3-0 match record, as all doubles divisions utilized a round-robin format. Morgan and Zens defeated the team of Jacob Delehant and Mitchell Crothers 10-7 in the final round to secure the championship.

In the other singles divisions, Matthew Mauszycki won the U.S. Open division, narrowly defeating Shane Callahan 10-9(3) in the semifinals and Sutton Thompson 10-9(8) in the finals en route to the title. He defeated Matteah Graves 10-5 in the opening round.

Alex Mattke cruised to the Miami Open title, defeating Kloe Rockwell 10-0 and Owen Holstein 10-3 to reach the championship match. Mattke fought off a challenge from runner-up Gavin Meyer to win the match 10-6.

Brooke Steidl was the Cincinnati Open division champion, finishing with a perfect 3-0 match record in the round-robin tournament, taking down eventual runner-up Gabbie Thompson in the second round 10-6.

Macy Zens was successful in the round-robin format, sporting a 3-0 match record to win the Laver Cup division. Zens picked up a 10-3 win in the opening round over Addison Brenden and a 10-6 victory over Shaylee Zens in the second round.

In doubles, Thompson paired with Dawson Adams to go 3-0 en route to the Australian Open division championship. The pair narrowly defeated Dayton Adams and Simon Wiese 10-8 in the second round of the tournament.

The team of Baylee Callahan and Sydney Bohle won all three matches to win the Wimbledon doubles division, scoring a 10-2 second-round win over eventual runner-ups Patzer and Callum Cole.

In the Indian Wells mixed doubles division, the pair of Cooper Star and Katie Morgan went 3-0 to claim the championship, securing the title in the final round by taking down the team of Graves and Dayton Adams 8-3.
