Canyon team tennis falls to Wimberley in UIL Class 4A state championship match

The Canyon team tennis squad finished off its 2025 campaign on Thursday evening, falling to Wimberley in the UIL Class 4A state championship match on Oct. 23.

The Eagles were defeated 10-5 by the Texans at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco.

Canyon’s wins came from Hadlee House and Addie Johnson in girls doubles, Lawson Posey and Liliana Veneklasen in mixed doubles, Carter Neighbors in boys singles and Olivia Neighbors in girls singles.

Canyon took down Texarkana Pleasant Grove 10-0 on Wednesday in the state semifinal match to reach the state championship.

David DeLeon’s team knocked off Graham, Brock, Vernon and Seminole to reach the regional finals. In Abilene, the Eagles beat defending state champion and cross-town rival Randall to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Randall defeated Wimberley in the state semifinals last year before overcoming Wills Point in the championship. The Texans knocked off the Raiders, who also won state in 2022, in the 2023 state title.

Canyon finishes the 2025 campaign as the Class 4A runner-up, notching a 26-3 overall mark and reaching the state tournament for the second time in school history. The last time the Eagles qualified for the event was in 2018, when Canyon won its first match against Midlothian Heritage before losing in the state title to Fredericksburg.

With the team tennis season over, DeLeon’s team will now turn its focus towards the spring season.
