Will longtime St. John Paul II golf coach return in 2026? 'Haven't made up my mind yet'
Will Geoff Converse, longtime St. John Paul II School's head golf coach, be back in Hyannis next season?
After the final scorecards of the 2025 high school boys golf season were signed and pleasantries exchanged at Blissful Meadows in Uxbridge last month, Sandwich head coach Ryan Potter thumped Converse on the back with a smile and said, “We’ll see you next season … right?”
There’s a lot that golf coaches do behind the scenes, from finding courses to play to finding teams to play and setting up tee times if the group qualifies for playoffs. That stuff takes its toll.
“I haven't made up my mind yet, but I still like it,” Converse said. “I have to talk it over with my wife and get her input because she’ll have a big say on what I do in the future, but if it's been positive for the kids because of me, then I'll be forever grateful for that.”
Converse called this senior class one of the most dedicated he’s had in his 17-year tenure at St. John Paul II.
“They’re going to go on and be very important people in this world because they have that kind of capability and a true desire,” he said. “They’re not afraid to put in the effort, and that was one of the reasons we were as successful as we’ve been this year.”
Four seniors put a tee in the ground at Blissful Meadows, but Converse believes that he’s probably learned more from them—and the seven total seniors on his roster—than the other way around.
For someone who has been around the game as long as he has, that’s saying something.
“He’s (Converse) always there for us,” Richards said. “He wants the best for us as a team and that takes a huge weight off our shoulders.”
Even this deep in his tenure, Converse still gets enjoyment turning up to the golf course.
He joked that Nauset’s Brian Hicks is the real old head of the group, but other coaches look to him too because of the program he’s built at St. John Paul II.
