Meet Team USA for the Skechers World Champions Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event set for December
The U.S. is back to defend its title.
Two years ago, the Americans won the inaugural World Champions Cup and they’ll be looking to go 2-for-2 in December at Feather Sound Country Club in Clearwater, Florida.
Officially now the Skechers World Champions Cup, this unique competition pits three teams ‒ the U.S., Europe and an International team ‒ against each other in a Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup-style match play event.
Who is on the U.S. team for the Skechers World Champions Cup?
The Americans are captained by Jim Furyk. His vice captains are Steve Flesch and Billy Andrade. Like the other team squads, the U.S. team has six players in all, including a playing captain. Furyk’s players are”
Stewart Cink
Jerry Kelly
Justin Leonard
Steve Stricker
Jason Caron
“I think we have the type of team that can repeat as champions of this event,” Furyk said. “Stewart has been playing lights out this season, and we all saw how Jerry rose to the occasion and was such a key player for our team in winning two years ago. Strick is a guy who has plenty of experience playing under pressure in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups, and his leadership as a winning captain twice is invaluable. And I’ll take Justin Leonard and his knack for performing in the biggest situations every day of the week. The more I talk about these guys, the more fired up I get for us to go out there and compete.”
The winning 2023 U.S. team also had Furyk as playing captain, Andrade as a vice captain and Kelly as one of the players. Andrade, in fact, subbed in as a player after Furyk was injured and couldn’t finish.
