Today in MMA history: The Silva leg break heard 'round the world
Twelve years ago Sunday, Anderson Silva threw a kick, and his screams of pain immediately after were heard 'round the world.
Silva suffered arguably the most infamously horrific broken leg in MMA history Dec. 28, 2013, in a middleweight title rematch against champion Chris Weidman, who had beaten him to win the belt earlier in the year. Weidman checked a Silva right leg kick in the second round, and the Brazilian's leg snapped in half.
(In a moment of horrendously cruel MMA irony, Weidman broke his own leg in a remarkably similar fashion against Uriah Hall in 2021.)
Check out the full gallery below, as well as video highlights from Weidman's win at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
