Emma Raducanu put together a solid week in Romania, but it ended on a sour note after she was outplayed in the final.

Sorana Cirstea took control from the start and did not let up, eventually winning the title with an emphatic 6-0, 6-2 scoreline.

Despite the result, Raducanu tried to stay positive, though she did speak about what went wrong for her in the match.

At her press conference following the crushing loss, when asked about her emotional state, she confessed: “It was obviously really tough.”

The British number one suggested that her health had taken a downturn in the days leading up to the final, saying: “I think Sorana played a great match for sure, and I’ve kind of… yeah, just been kind of dealing with some health… just not feeling great this week and then yesterday was obviously a battle. I felt quite tired today and just need to try and rest as best as possible.

“But, I mean, I couldn’t do anything either against Sorana today. You know, she was playing incredible, and she has been all week, and I can’t sing her praises enough about how good she’s been, how nice of a person she is, and, yeah it’s just great to have someone like her around on the tour.”

Raducanu went into more detail about how she had been feeling when speaking to Sky Sports: “I’ve just been a bit ill this week and then yesterday’s match was so long and it just took it out of me. So for today I just felt like energy-wise that I didn’t really have much energy. It was really difficult but again Sorana played so well.

“I had no chance if I wasn’t 100% but even if I was 100%, she was still playing incredible tennis. So all credit to her because she really deserves this one.”

It was still a very good week for Emma Raducanu

Despite the disappointing result, there was plenty for Raducanu to be proud of during the Transylvania Open. Her run to the final marked her best showing in any event since winning the 2021 US Open.

Meanwhile, Katie Boulter lifted the title in Ostrava, and together with Raducanu’s appearance in Romania, it was the first time two British women had reached finals on separate tours in the same week.

Sonay Kartal also made headlines by coming through qualifying to reach the WTA main draw at the Qatar Open.

On the men’s side, Jack Draper returned from injury and helped lead Britain’s Davis Cup team past Norway in a convincing tie win.
