Player who beat Federer and Nadal announces retirement from ATP tennis this year
Over the last few years, tennis has bid farewell to some of its biggest names, as several legends have brought their careers to a close.
And while the sport is still in good hands with players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff leading the way, there’s always a bit of sadness when another familiar face leaves the stage.
Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have all stepped away from the game. The latest player may not have quite the same career as these icons but has enjoyed wins over Federer and Nadal during his career.
That player is David Goffin, who has today announced his retirement from tennis.

He reflected on his 17-year career, narrating the video with a sense of closure and gratitude. “Some decisions stay with you for a long time,” he began.
“I’ve given everything to this sport, and tennis has given me more than I could have ever imagined.
“The matches, the battles, the wins, the losses. The emotions. The people who were there through all of it.
“And that’s why this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life.”
The video ended simply, with a message on screen: “This will be my last season. Join me on this journey.”

Goffin’s decision brings to a close a career that included six ATP titles and a climb to world number seven. While he never captured a Grand Slam, his consistency and reliability made him one of the most respected players on tour.
He also achieved 21 wins over top-ten opponents during his career, taking down the likes of Juan Martin del Potro, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton.
Some of his most impressive wins include victories over Novak Djokovic at Monte Carlo, Roger Federer at the ATP Finals, and Rafael Nadal at both the ATP Cup and the ATP Finals.
Carlos Alcaraz even named Goffin as one of his toughest opponents after losing to him in Miami last year.
While he may not have picked up any major trophies during his time in the game, there are plenty within tennis who will miss him when he’s gone.
