Carlos Alcaraz joins Stefan Edberg and Jannik Sinner with rare tennis feat at Indian Wells
Carlos Alcaraz extended his perfect start to the season, picking up his 15th straight win on Wednesday.
Since splitting with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero at the end of last year, Alcaraz has looked even sharper, carrying a flawless record into Indian Wells.
The Spaniard is chasing a third straight title at Indian Wells and took another step forward with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Casper Ruud in the fourth round.
Alcaraz was in strong form against Ruud, firing seven aces and setting up a quarter-final clash with Cameron Norrie. He will be looking to keep that momentum going against the Brit.
His 15th straight win matches Andre Agassi’s best-ever start to an ATP season and puts Alcaraz alongside Jannik Sinner and Stefan Edberg in some pretty exclusive company.
Carlos Alcaraz joins exclusive list with latest streak
According to the numbers from OptaAce, Alcaraz is just the third player in the Open Era to open a season with 15 straight wins before turning 23.
Sinner was one of them, starting his 2024 campaign with a run that included both an Australian Open and Rotterdam title before losing to the Spaniard in the Indian Wells semi-finals.
Stefan Edberg hit that milestone back in 1987 after taking titles at the Australian Open and Memphis. His streak ended with a loss to Boris Becker in the Indian Wells final.
If Alcaraz can get past Cameron Norrie later this week, he will match both Sinner’s and Roger Federer’s best season starts.
He has already moved past Stan Wawrinka’s mark of 13 straight wins from his start to the 2014 ATP season.
Carlos Alcaraz should not underestimate Cameron Norrie
While there are 28 spots between them in the ATP rankings, Norrie has taken three of the last five meetings with Alcaraz.
The most recent of those came at the 2025 Paris Masters, where he beat the Spaniard in three sets.
“This win is so big for me. I had lost the first round of the qualifiers here last year. Coming back from my injury, I’ve been trying to enjoy my tennis in the second half of the year and I was able to do that,” Norrie stated after the match.
“To get the biggest win of my career, my first win over a world number one, and probably the most confident player in the world right now, I am pleased with the way I did it.
“I actually went for a walk this morning with my coach and we talked through serving for the match and what I needed to tell myself,” said Norrie, who beat Sebastian Baez in straight sets in Monday’s first round.
“I was so, so tight serving for the match yesterday against [Sebastian] Baez.
“I told myself I deserved to be in this moment, I want to be here, and I felt quite relaxed.
“It was a nice walk, a very important walk.”
