Champions crowned at Mitchell State Farm junior tennis tournament
Jun. 2—MITCHELL — The first summer tennis tournament to be held in Mitchell this year took place on Saturday.
The Doug Markworth State Farm junior tennis tournament was held at Hitchcock Park, featuring 55 total participants split across eight singles divisions and five doubles divisions, with each participant guaranteed two matches in their respective division.
Mallory Buenzow was a double champion on the day, first winning the Indian Wells round-robin division with a perfect 3-0 match record. She defeated eventual runner-up Katie Warren in the opening match of the round robin 8-5. Teaming up with third-place finisher Gabbie Thompson, Buenzow narrowly won the Olympic doubles division title 8-6 over the team of Brooke Steidl and Liv Larson.
The Mitchell Flight 2 boys doubles team of Cooper Star and Sutton Thompson from the spring high school season won the U.S. Open doubles division championship 8-1 over Patrick Morgan and Clay Bathke. Star was also the runner-up to Harrison Krajewski in the U.S. Open singles division, while Thompson took third place.
In the rest of singles play, Matteah Graves secured the French Open division title with an 8-1 win over Morgan in the finals following a pair of close victories to reach the championship match, defeating Bathke and Ivan Krajewski by finals of 8-5. Jacob Delehant was victorious in the Australian Open division over Stratton Zens 8-6.
Charlie Patzer took home the Lavar Cup round-robin division after going 3-0, defeating runner-up Nick Middlestedt 8-2 in the opening round. Gavin Meyer dropped only six games en route to the Miami Open championship, taking down Bergen Osterkamp 8-2 in the finals.
Sydney Bohle matched Meyer's feat, losing only six total games to win the Wimbledon division, securing the top honors with an 8-0 victory over Jonah Iburg. Abel Opperman won the Olympic round-robin title, defeating runner-up Oakley Royston 8-0 in the second round on the way to a 3-0 match record.
In doubles competition, Avery Tennant and Katie Morgan were victorious in the Wimbledon division, defeating Ivory Fenski and Sabrina Krajewski 8-2 for the title. Connor Mitzel and Ivan Krajewski completed an 8-0 sweep to the Australian Open division over Patzer and Liam Schiefen, and Callum Cole and Caleb Machado won the French Open division 8-5 over Brynn Pickett and Emaan Shaikh.
